In 2025, many universities will increase their admission quotas based on the results of their own entrance exams. To increase their chances, many candidates are now starting the race to get into university.

Nguyen Linh Chi, a 12th-grade student specializing in Mathematics at Bac Kan High School for Gifted Students (Bac Kan province), who participated in the first round of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's aptitude test on January 18th and 19th, said that she took the test to familiarize herself with the exam format. She stated that the second round of the test would be her official exam.

In preparation for this exam, Chi spent a lot of time each week studying and practicing online. Chi said: "After this exam, if I'm weak in any area, I'll focus on reviewing it to improve for the official exam."

Hanoi University of Science and Technology is the first university to launch the 2025 Thinking Skills Assessment Exam. According to the newly announced admissions plan, this year the university will maintain three admission methods: Talent-based admission (20% of quotas); admission based on Thinking Skills Assessment Exam scores (40% of quotas); and admission based on 2025 high school graduation exam scores (40% of quotas).

Thus, compared to last year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology reduced its admission quota based on high school graduation exam scores in 2025 by 10%, while the quota for the competency assessment method increased by 10%.

Not only Hanoi University of Science and Technology, but many other universities have also announced plans to increase their admission quotas based on the results of their own entrance exams.

This is also a trend among many universities: reducing the number of places allocated based on academic transcripts and high school graduation exam scores, and increasing the proportion allocated to separate admission methods and entrance exams.

Nguyen Huu Tri, a 12th-grade student at Pham Hong Thai High School (Hanoi), said that to prepare for several separate exams, he thoroughly researched the new aspects of these exams to develop the best study plan. To confidently take the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's aptitude test, Tri stated: "I spent a lot of time reviewing and practicing with sample exam questions published by the university beforehand."

By regularly researching and updating herself on trends, Trinh Minh Chau, a 12th-grade student at Nguyen Hue High School (Hanoi), has been preparing for the Hanoi National University's aptitude test since 10th grade.

Chau said: “I chose to prepare for the aptitude test by combining self-study with training at a center, hoping to increase my chances of getting into my favorite school. Currently, there are many different admission methods, which is both an opportunity and a challenge for us.”

The first cohort of students studying the 2018 General Education Program will take the high school graduation exam in 2025, which will feature many significant changes. Therefore, this year's separate exams will also have many modifications to align with the new program.

At Hanoi National University, there will be many changes regarding the questions, question format, and question content in the 2025 competency assessment exam. Each exam topic will feature clustered questions across all sections.

In the context of the given data, the exam will include 1-3 different questions to assess the candidate's overall ability. The cluster question may be a new topic with given data, requiring the candidate to identify, analyze, and propose solutions to the given problem.

Regarding the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's aptitude test, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien, Vice Director of the university, stated that the process of creating this year's aptitude test questions was more complex and challenging than last year because all questions needed to be compared to ensure they aligned with the content of the 2018 General Education Program.

To date, more than 50 higher education institutions have used the results of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology's Thinking Skills Assessment Exam for admissions.

However, according to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien, depending on the admission regulations, each school converts the exam scores to a different scale. Therefore, Dr. Dien advises candidates to carefully research the information during the application process.
