The literature subject no longer relies on guessing exam questions or rote memorization.

Mr. Huynh Van Chuong, Director of the Quality Management Department (Ministry of Education and Training), stated that the 2025 high school graduation exam will have some new features compared to previous exams. Specifically, the exam from 2025 onwards will not only test knowledge but will focus more on assessing the ability to apply knowledge to practice. Accordingly, there will be many questions based on real-life situations in life, science , and society, helping candidates see the connection between learned knowledge and the world around them.

The results of the high school graduation exam are used for various purposes, including certifying high school graduation, evaluating the teaching and learning process, and allowing higher education and vocational education institutions to use them for admissions in a spirit of autonomy. Therefore, the exam questions will be designed to clearly differentiate between groups of candidates.

A notable new feature is that the literature exam will utilize materials outside of the textbook. This helps assess students' reading comprehension and understanding of texts in real-life situations, preventing rote learning and memorization. The materials may include passages, poems, or situations related to current events and social life.

Associate Professor Do Ngoc Thong, Editor-in-Chief of the 2018 General Education Literature Program, shared that since the time allotted for the literature exam is limited, the exam questions cannot require candidates to write excessively long essays. The materials in the exam are usually not too long or too difficult, thus requiring candidates to write clearly, appropriately to their level, target audience, and the allotted time.

Reduce the probability of getting points due to random selection.

According to Mr. Huynh Van Chuong, using high school graduation results for university admissions is one of the three criteria of the high school graduation exam, aiming to reduce costs, alleviate pressure, and increase fairness among students from different regions across the country. To better achieve this goal, in line with Central Committee Resolution 29, National Assembly Resolution 88, and other resolutions, directives, and instructions from the Government and the Prime Minister, the exam results must be reliable and differentiated to meet admissions objectives. Accordingly, the high school graduation exam questions from 2025 onwards have undergone some important changes.

Specifically, the changes to the structural format are designed to better suit the assessment of learners' abilities. At the same time, the new structural format also contributes to increasing the differentiation of the exam, especially the new true/false and short-answer formats.

The 2025 exam will have a question distribution of 4:3:3 for knowledge, comprehension, and application levels. It can be seen that with approximately 70% of the questions focusing on knowledge and comprehension, the goal is to achieve a good graduation score, while the approximately 60% focusing on comprehension and application will effectively differentiate candidates for university admissions.

Another major change concerns the format of the high school graduation exam. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ha, Deputy Director of the Quality Management Department (Ministry of Education and Training), stated that for multiple-choice subjects, the math exam will have a 90-minute time limit, while the remaining subjects will have a 50-minute time limit. With the new exam format, the multiple-choice questions are divided into three parts. Part 1 consists of multiple-choice questions with four options, each correct answer worth 0.25 points. Part 2 consists of true/false questions. Each question has four options, and for each option, the candidate must choose true or false. A candidate who correctly answers one option receives 0.1 points; two options receive 0.25 points; three options receive 0.5 points; and all four options receive 1 point.

Part 3 consists of short-answer multiple-choice questions. Candidates mark their answers in the corresponding boxes. For mathematics, in Part 3, each correct answer is worth 0.5 points. For other subjects, in this section, each correct answer is worth 0.25 points. "With the new exam format structure, the probability of getting points through random selection has decreased from 2.5 points to 1.975 points for mathematics, and to 2.35 points for the remaining multiple-choice subjects," Mr. Ha said.

The differentiation will be based on two factors, Mr. Ha analyzed: firstly, in terms of technique, specifically the exam format with true/false multiple-choice questions and short-answer multiple-choice questions with different point values for each answer, reducing probability. The same question requires candidates to have a strong, comprehensive knowledge base to achieve the maximum score. Experimental results on tens of thousands of students have confirmed this. Secondly, the questions aim to assess candidates' abilities and their capacity to apply knowledge to solve practical problems, rather than difficult, trick questions. This knowledge is linked to the curriculum and required learning outcomes.

Includes a supplementary guide to solving exam questions.

To meet the needs of parents and students regarding exam questions, Thanh Nien Newspaper will publish a supplement providing solutions to the exam questions in the issues dated June 27th and 28th. During these two days, Thanh Nien Newspaper will also collaborate with partner organizations to distribute newspapers at exam locations.

In addition, after each exam is completed, Thanh Nien will continuously update on thanhnien.vn with suggested solutions from experienced teachers.

We invite you to follow along.

For the first time, multiple subjects were tested simultaneously in the same examination room.

Perhaps never before in the history of examinations have so many different subjects been tested simultaneously, and even more so have candidates taken different exams in the same examination room. However, this year's exam will only have three sessions, with the third session focusing on elective subjects. Although it's only one session, each candidate will take two subjects. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training has divided the exam into two shifts, each shift potentially including all elective subjects to optimize candidates' choices. Exam room assignments are based on the elective subjects. Once the exam paper for an elective subject is distributed, all candidates registered for that subject in the same exam room must take the exam immediately. Within a single exam room, multiple subjects can be tested simultaneously in each shift. For example, physics might be tested in both shifts, corresponding to two different time slots within the same session.

Mr. Huynh Van Chuong stated that for the convenience of the candidates, they will be arranged in one room and will not have to move during the exams, even if the same subject is tested at two different times. To ensure security, instead of only 24 exam codes, the number will be increased to 48, with 24 codes per time slot. Furthermore, exam papers will be collected by exam room, not by subject, during the elective exam session.

Mr. Chuong also stated that because the exam rooms are arranged optimally according to the candidates' elective subjects, preliminary data shows that each room will mainly have one subject being tested, but some rooms may have 2-3 subjects simultaneously, and more than 3 subjects are rare but still possible.

"These complex difficulties will only be at the management level and within the education sector, while for PhDs, all procedures will be implemented more smoothly and easily than in previous years," Mr. Chuong said.

Mr. Chuong noted that when taking the elective exam, candidates must be present at the exam site from the beginning of the session and are only allowed to leave the exam site when the elective exam time is over (after both elective subjects have finished).

99.16% of candidates completed the exam registration procedures.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training's summary, as of the afternoon of June 25th, the total number of candidates who came to complete the registration procedures for the exam was 1,152,336, reaching a rate of 99.16%. Of these, 22,140 candidates took the exam under the 2006 General Education Program, accounting for 88.73%. 1,130,196 candidates took the exam under the 2018 General Education Program, accounting for 99.54%.

Yen Bai - some areas flooded, backup examination sites prepared.

In recent days, the flood situation in Yen Bai province has become complicated, causing landslides and flooding in some localities. Roads from some villages to the high school graduation exam sites have been affected by landslides and muddy conditions, making travel difficult for candidates. On the afternoon of June 25th, the Yen Bai Provincial People's Committee issued a directive instructing relevant agencies to strengthen disaster response during the 2025 high school graduation exam. Accordingly, backup exam sites and rooms should be prepared in case the main exam sites are affected by natural disasters.
