The general trend is that the benchmark scores will rise.
In the 2024 admissions season, the method of admission based on the 2024 high school graduation exam scores continues to dominate, both in terms of the number of candidates using this method and the quotas of universities. Based on the distribution of exam scores, many admissions experts predict that the cut-off scores for universities using this method will increase in many subject combinations, with an increase of approximately 0.25 to 3 points.

“The cutoff scores for many majors at the National Economics University may increase by 0.25 to 0.75 points compared to last year; top-tier majors will see a slight increase of about 0.25 points, while mid-tier majors will see a more significant increase, from 0.5 to 0.75 points.” This is the assessment of Dr. Le Anh Duc, Deputy Head of the Training Management Department at the National Economics University.
According to Dr. Le Anh Duc, this year the university will recruit approximately 7,000 students, with 18% of the quotas based solely on high school graduation exam scores, a decrease of 7% compared to 2023. Analysis of the score distribution shows that the average scores for 6 out of 9 high school graduation exam subjects increased from 0.06 to 1.04; including subjects in the university's main admission combinations such as mathematics, literature, English, and physics; therefore, the cut-off scores will increase in line with the general trend.
With the university's six new majors including Software Engineering, Data Science , Artificial Intelligence, Information Security, and Information Systems, Dr. Le Anh Duc predicts that the cutoff score could be above 26 because these are all highly sought-after majors that align with market trends.
According to Master Nguyen Quang Trung, Deputy Head of the Training Management Department at the University of Commerce , in recent years, the general admission score for the university has been 26, with some popular majors such as Marketing, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management having scores of 27 or higher.
“This year, the percentage of admissions based on high school graduation exam scores has decreased from 50% to 40%, while candidates' exam scores have increased. Therefore, the 2024 cutoff scores may increase slightly, by about 0.25 in popular majors, while remaining stable in others. For the 8 programs with an international career-oriented focus (IPOP), which are newly introduced and not yet widely known, the cutoff scores will be lower – at around 24 points,” predicted Master Nguyen Quang Trung.
At the Banking Academy , Head of Training Department Tran Manh Ha commented: with the distribution of high school graduation exam scores this year, the admission scores for the academy and top universities will generally remain the same or increase slightly compared to last year.
Regarding Hanoi Open University, Do Ngoc Anh, Director of the Center for Communication and Admissions, predicts that the admission threshold will increase, but it is unlikely to rise dramatically. In the engineering, technology, and science fields, such as Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the University of Natural Sciences (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), and some departments of Hanoi Medical University, the cut-off scores are also predicted to increase by 0.5 – 1 point compared to 2023.
Candidates shouldn't worry too much.
After hearing the predicted cut-off scores for universities in 2024, with the assessment that "the trend is upward," many candidates expressed anxiety and worry.
“The minimum admission score announced by the National Economics University is 22. With 27.5 points in the D01 subject combination, I applied for the International Business major as my first choice. My exam score this year is the same as last year's cutoff score. Initially, I was quite confident, but when I heard the professors predict that the cutoff score might increase slightly, I became a little worried. Even so, for the lower-ranked options, I also applied to universities with 2023 cutoff scores about 2-3 points lower than my exam score,” shared Nguyen Ngoc Anh, residing in Hanoi.

In contrast to Ngoc Anh, candidate Ngo Anh Son, residing in Bac Ninh province, said that the increase in cut-off scores, especially in the C00 combination, was not difficult to predict. “As soon as the Ministry of Education and Training announced the high school graduation exam results, and simultaneously analyzed the score distribution for each subject and each combination, it was immediately apparent that the C00 combination had very high scores. Therefore, it is likely that the cut-off scores for top universities in this combination, such as Teacher Training, Journalism, Culture, Literature, etc., will increase,” Ngo Anh Son speculated.
Because he had carefully studied the exam score distribution for 2024, as well as the cutoff scores for 2021, 2022, and 2023, with a score of 25.5 in the C00 combination, despite really liking the Journalism and Communication major at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ngo Anh Son only dared to register for this major at Thang Long University. According to Son, his score is likely enough to get him into Thang Long University, fulfilling his application.
With only a few hours left until the deadline for registering for university and college admissions in 2024 on the system, and amidst the anxiety of some candidates regarding the predicted increase in 2024 cut-off scores, experts advise that candidates should not be overly anxious and hastily change their preferences based on emotion. They emphasize that the cut-off scores predicted by teachers are only for reference; the exact admission scores can only be known with certainty at the time of official announcement.
Besides predicted cutoff scores, important factors when candidates register and arrange their application preferences are their interests, abilities, suitability, actual exam scores, family economic conditions, etc., in relation to the major and the school they are applying to.
Candidates should carefully study the admission plans and cut-off scores of the universities, and rank their application preferences into three groups: the dream group (at the top); the manageable group (in the middle, including early admission applications); and the safe group (at the bottom) to maximize their chances of admission and minimize risks.
According to the plan, from July 31st to 5 PM on August 6th, candidates will submit their application fees online; no later than 5 PM on August 19th, universities nationwide will announce the cut-off scores and notify the results of the first round of admissions.
