Thien An is currently a controversial figure as she sits on the judging panel at the preliminary round of Miss Grand Vietnam 2026. During contestant Phao's (real name Nguyen Dieu Huyen) performance, when judge Huong Giang asked, "If I give you 5 points today, what do you think the reason is?", Phao responded, "If you give me 5 points, it means I still have a chance to make it into the top 3."
Thien An then interrupted, asking, "Is it because you voted?"

Thien An's actions sparked debate on beauty pageant forums. Some opinions suggested she was mocking Huong Giang's recent top 3 finish at Miss Grand International All Star thanks to fan votes. They argued that her words in that context were tactless and disrespectful to Huong Giang. Many accounts flooded Thien An's personal page, commenting sarcastically about her own past top 20 finish at Miss Grand International 2022 thanks to fan votes.
Thien An then responded. She denied any intention of mocking Huong Giang for making it to the top 3 thanks to votes and asked anti-fan accounts to stop speculating and making sarcastic remarks about her. "I also received votes when I competed, and I'm very proud because it's the audience's love, and it's important. I didn't mean anything by it, but it's truly frightening when it comes from people like you," the beauty queen expressed.
Not long ago, Thien An also sparked controversy when she expressed her opinion on the 2026 high school graduation exam in Literature. She shared: "How can we have 'Vietnamese Steve Jobs'? Why should we be like Steve Jobs when we can be ourselves? Is there anyone who wants to challenge the exam? Raise your hand and let me know."
Some accounts agreed with the opinion of the beauty queen born in 2000. Because as soon as the essay topic was announced, there were opinions expressing concern about the topic mentioning world- famous figures such as Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg.
However, some accounts refuted Thien An's argument. They argued that this was an open-ended question, not requiring contestants to become a copy of someone else as Thien An suggested, but rather asking students how Vietnam can nurture talented, creative individuals who are beneficial to society and capable of creating value with a global impact. They argued that the beauty queen hadn't carefully read the question before making contradictory statements.
Following the controversy, Doan Thien An deleted the post.
