After appearing in the display area of the first Mazda Flagship showroom in Ho Chi Minh City, the legendary Mazda MX-5 convertible has officially had its price announced for the Vietnamese market.

The convertible versions of the Mazda MX-5 are priced at 1.339 billion VND , while the hardtop version costs 1.439 billion VND .

The legendary two-seater convertible sports car.

First launched in February 1989, the Mazda MX-5 is now in its fourth generation. The MX-5s available in Vietnam belong to this generation, including both the manually operated soft-top and electrically operated hard-top versions.

The Mazda MX-5 has dimensions of 3,915 x 1,735 x 1,235 mm (length x width x height) for the hardtop version, while the soft-top version has a height of 1,240 mm. The roadster has a wheelbase of 2,310 mm and a ground clearance of 135 mm.

One of the Mazda MX-5's technical highlights lies in its optimized weight distribution, achieving a near 50:50 ratio. This characteristic, along with its rear-wheel drive setup, allows Mazda's roadster to handle nimbly and respond quickly to driver input.

The heart of the Mazda MX-5 is a longitudinally mounted 2.0L SkyActiv-G engine, producing 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 156 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Upon its launch in the Vietnamese market, the Mazda MX-5 came with two transmission options: a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, with the manual transmission only available on the black convertible version.

In terms of equipment, the Mazda MX-5 features a steering wheel-mounted display cluster with three classic-looking circular screens, and an 8.8-inch infotainment screen mounted on the dashboard. The car uses numerous physical buttons to adjust the air conditioning and power windows.

The center console features the Commander Knob, along with a traditional inline gear selector and a mechanical parking brake.

The Mazda MX-5's interior is dominated by a Sport Tan beige-brown color scheme and Nappa Terracotta leather upholstery. The car features an automatic climate control system and a 9-speaker Bose sound system. The Mazda MX-5 has four airbags, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and safety systems such as cross-traffic alert and active braking assistance (front and rear).

Who are the Mazda MX-5 buyers?

Mazda's legendary Roadster makes its debut in the Vietnamese market amidst a strong wave of electrification. The MX-5 itself also launches alongside the brand's first pair of hybrid-powered SUVs in Vietnam.

The emergence of pure gasoline-powered sports cars was a highlight of the Vietnamese market in 2025, and with the Mazda MX-5 in the first half of 2026, customer interest in these "fun cars" shows no signs of waning.

While models like the Volkswagen Golf R Performance or Skoda Octavia RS, with their relatively high price tags, are considered luxury cars used by their manufacturers for "brand building," the Mazda MX-5 seems to be a more practical name, targeting a wider range of customers who want to access the luxury car segment.

At the launch event, a representative from Thaco revealed that the Mazda MX-5 had received hundreds of orders since it was first displayed at the Flagship showroom in Ho Chi Minh City. The order ratio between versions is unclear, but the hardtop variant seems more suitable for the practical needs in Vietnam.

While possessing significantly less engine power than the Volkswagen Golf R Performance or Skoda Octavia RS, the Mazda MX-5 also boasts a more accessible price point compared to its two European rivals. The highlight of the Mazda MX-5 lies in its lightweight design and near-50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution, which enhances driving feel.

Similar to the Volkswagen Golf R Performance and Skoda Octavia RS, the Mazda MX-5 will target customers who appreciate driving feel, perhaps even a more "pure" one due to the roadster's distinctive convertible design.

As a typical roadster, the Mazda MX-5 has a two-seat cabin and relatively limited rear cargo space. While this design might be a drawback for the average consumer, the Mazda MX-5 can satisfy customers who appreciate uniqueness, both in appearance and driving feel.

The Mazda MX-5 was previously available in Vietnam through private imports with a price tag of approximately 1.8 billion VND . When officially distributed by Mazda Vietnam and Thaco, the MX-5 now starts at 1.339 billion VND for the convertible version, increasing to 1.439 billion VND for the hardtop version. A manual transmission option is only available for the convertible version of the Mazda MX-5.

Compared to before, the price of the Mazda MX-5 has become significantly more affordable. The increased ease of ownership could help the Mazda MX-5 appeal to many Vietnamese customers. While sales may not skyrocket, the Mazda MX-5 is likely to become a two-door convertible sports car with stable sales in the Vietnamese market.
