"Greening" every alleyway and neighborhood.
Stemming from the reality of accumulated household waste in residential areas and the dumping of garbage into rivers and canals, in 2021, the Veterans Association of Xeo Duoc 3 hamlet, An Bien commune, proactively developed a model to mobilize members and residents to collect plastic waste, linking it with the movement to build a cultured and civilized lifestyle. After five years of persistent implementation, the model has not only proven effective but has also become a leading example, creating a clear ripple effect in the community. According to Mr. Danh Luan, Chairman of the Veterans Association of Xeo Duoc 3 hamlet, to make the model truly effective, the association determined that it must be implemented step by step, with veteran members as the core force and exemplary leaders.

During a regular cleanup campaign, veterans in their simple uniforms gather along the canals and roads in the hamlet. Some use tongs to pick up trash, others drag bags, and some paddle boats to collect floating garbage. After these campaigns, the village roads and alleys are clean and beautiful, and the people's awareness of environmental hygiene gradually improves. From 2021 to the present, the Xeo Duoc 3 Hamlet Veterans Association has organized more than 50 cleanup campaigns to collect waste and clean up accumulated garbage, with over 1,000 cadres, members, and residents participating, collecting more than 1.2 tons of various types of waste. Through self-governing group meetings and regular activities, veteran members directly disseminate information about the harmful effects of plastic waste on the environment and health, and guide residents on how to sort waste and build waste pits suitable to each household's conditions.
To date, 98% of veteran association members and over 100 households in the hamlet have signed commitments to participate in environmental protection. The hamlet has built 39 incinerators. Many families proactively dig pits to process organic waste for composting, and recyclable waste is collected and sold or processed according to regulations. As a result, the indiscriminate dumping of garbage into canals and ditches has almost disappeared, restoring clean and clear water. Mr. Nguyen Hoang Thuc, a veteran from Xeo Duoc 3 hamlet, shared: “Previously, many people took waste disposal lightly. Since being encouraged, signing commitments, and working together, people understand more clearly the responsibility of each family towards the surrounding environment.”
Awareness from the family
A regular meeting of the "Green Living Women" club in Tay Yen commune, directly managed by the Women's Union of the commune, took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The discussions were specific and practical, focusing on changing daily habits within each family. Members received hands-on guidance on everything from sorting waste in the kitchen and reducing the use of plastic bags and single-use plastic items to planting trees and medicinal herbs for health and beauty care using simple, safe methods suitable for rural conditions.

After more than 5 months since its establishment, the "Green Living Women" model in Tay Yen commune has attracted over 30 core members, including active female officials and members of the Women's Union. The model's unique approach lies in its family-centered approach, with women as the driving force behind changing lifestyle habits. Ms. Le Thanh Nho, President of the Tay Yen Commune Women's Union, stated that through regular training sessions and meetings, many members have proactively changed their family's lifestyle. Waste is sorted at the source, organic waste is composted for plants; plastic bottles and packaging are collected separately for recycling; and single-use plastic items are gradually being replaced with environmentally friendly products.
Operating not only within the club, the "Green Living Women" model in Tay Yen commune is also closely integrated with the "Building a Family with 5 No's and 3 Cleanliness Standards" campaign. Starting from the core members, it gradually spreads to branches, groups, and residential areas. Women become advocates, reminding relatives and neighbors to maintain environmental hygiene, reduce plastic waste, and contribute to building a civilized and sustainable lifestyle starting from each home.
