Fernando Carro, CEO of Leverkusen, revealed that in the contract between the two parties there is a special agreement, allowing the Spanish coach to take over one of the clubs he played for during his career, including Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
"In the next few weeks, we will know if there will be a change of coach at the clubs. We are a very professional club and must be prepared for all situations," said Mr. Carro.
Alonso's initial contract with Leverkusen ran until 2024. The two sides have agreed to extend it for another two years, until 2026. The former player has contributed greatly to Leverkusen winning three titles including the Bundesliga, the German Super Cup and the German Cup. The team also reached the Europa League final before losing to Atalanta last season.

Leverkusen's leadership wants Alonso to stay with the team until the end of his contract. "We are not naive. The truth is that the role of the coach is very important. Currently, Alonso is the number one candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. In a survey by Marca on April 18, many fans believe that Alonso is the most suitable factor for Real at the moment. He received more votes than Jürgen Klopp and Zinedine Zidane.
Alonso is in no rush to finalize his future and is still focused on completing the current season with Leverkusen.
