Fernando Carro, CEO of Leverkusen, revealed that the contract between the two parties included a special clause allowing the Spanish coach to take over one of the clubs he played for during his career, including Liverpool, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.
"In the next few weeks, we will know whether there will be a change of coach at the clubs. We are a very professional club and we have to prepare for all situations," said Carro.
Alonso's initial contract with Leverkusen ran until 2024. Both sides have agreed to extend it for another two years, until 2026. The former star player played a major role in helping Leverkusen win three titles: the Bundesliga, the German Super Cup, and the German Cup. The team also reached the Europa League final before suffering a defeat against Atalanta last season.

Leverkusen's leadership wants Alonso to stay with the team until the end of his contract. "We are not naive. The truth is that the coach's role is very important. That's why we are preparing the squad for next season with him. If there is interest from another club and Xabi also shows interest, we will sit down together," CEO Carro added.
Currently, Alonso is the leading candidate to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. In a Marca poll on April 18th, many fans believed that Alonso was the most suitable player for Real at this time. He received more votes than both Jürgen Klopp and Zinedine Zidane.
Alonso is in no hurry to decide his future and remains focused on completing the current season with Leverkusen. After the 1-1 draw against St. Pauli on April 21st, Leverkusen's hopes of defending their Bundesliga title this season are virtually dashed. The team is now 8 points behind Bayern Munich in the standings.
