The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority, in coordination with the People's Committee of Nghe An province, has just announced the Vinh International Airport Master Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.

Accordingly, Vinh International Airport is planned to be a dual-use airport for both civilian and military purposes, meeting the 4E standard as stipulated by ICAO.

During the period 2021-2030, the airport is planned to have a capacity of 8 million passengers per year and 25,000 tons of cargo per year.

By 2050, its operational capacity will be increased to 14 million passengers and 35,000 tons of cargo per year, becoming a modern aviation hub in the North Central region.

In terms of technical infrastructure, the airport will undergo a comprehensive expansion, with the existing runway extended to a size of 3,000 m x 45 m. By 2050, a second runway (direction 02-20) will be constructed to the east, allowing for the simultaneous operation of two runways.

The taxiway and apron system is also being upgraded with 3 parallel taxiways, connecting roads, and modern rapid exit ramps, while expanding the apron to 29 aircraft parking positions by 2050.

Regarding passenger terminals, the existing Terminal 1 will be expanded, increasing its capacity to 5 million passengers per year. In addition, a new Terminal 2 will be built in the area between the two runways, with an initial capacity of 3 million passengers per year, expanding to 9 million passengers per year by 2050, bringing the total airport capacity to 14 million passengers per year.

For cargo, the port will maintain the existing cargo terminal while constructing a new terminal north of Terminal T1, with a capacity of 25,000 tons/year, increasing to 35,000 tons/year by 2050.

The planning document for Vinh International Airport, prepared by the consulting firm, clearly states that in recent years the airport has experienced rapid growth in both passenger and cargo traffic, but the infrastructure has not kept pace.

The CHC runway, taxiway, and apron, constructed of asphalt concrete, have exceeded their 10-year design lifespan and show numerous signs of damage such as cracks and wheel ruts, affecting flight operations.

Terminal T1, put into operation by the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV) in 2015 with a capacity of 2 million passengers per year, served 2.64 million passengers in 2022 - exceeding its designed capacity. ACV is currently implementing a project to renovate and upgrade Terminal T1 to increase its total capacity to 3 million passengers per year.

However, current maintenance and repairs are only temporary. The progress of new construction projects is slow, partly due to delays in the procedures for transferring national defense land according to Decree 167/2017/ND-CP. Many essential items such as the aircraft parking area and Terminal 2 have yet to be implemented.

With its large scale and long-term vision, Vinh International Airport is expected to become a key aviation and logistics hub in the North Central region, directly connecting to the North-South expressway, the coastal road, and Cua Lo port, forming a strategic transportation network and promoting regional economic development.

Previously, Vinh International Airport had been closed since July for repairs. According to the plan, the three upgrade projects at Vinh airport have a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND. ACV is committed to completing all projects simultaneously before December 30th.

Vinh Airport commenced operations at the end of 2003, with a designed capacity of 2.75 million passengers per year, currently handling 21-26 flights daily. In July 2023, the airport had to cease operations for nearly 16 hours due to runway damage.
