From July 1, Vinh International Airport officially stopped operating to carry out the renovation and upgrading project. The items include: Renovation and upgrading of the passenger terminal, renovation and upgrading of the aircraft parking lot and the runway system. The project has a capital of nearly 1,000 billion VND invested by Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV).

After 3 months of implementation, the project has made significant progress. The six contractors participating in the project are mobilizing maximum human resources and equipment, racing against time to complete the project before December 30.

In package No. 11, construction and repair of runways and taxiways, CIENCO 4 Group undertakes to build 500m of runways and 200m of taxiways W1 and W2.

Engineer Nguyen Quang Trung - Deputy Site Commander of CIENCO 4 Group, said: 8 teams of the group have completed 384m of runway. The remaining 120m of weak ground has been completed with cement pile reinforcement (xmd), and is spreading crushed stone. It is expected that on October 10, the lower layer of concrete with M150 intensity will be poured, and on October 18, the upper layer of reinforced concrete with M350 will be poured.

"For the 2 taxiway sections, we have finished pouring M150 concrete and are assembling the formwork to prepare for pouring zigzag concrete slabs. The progress is basically on schedule," said engineer Trung.

In package 6, building 3 more aircraft parking lots, the contractor consortium is still facing difficulties due to land issues.
“According to the design, all three aircraft parking lots must be treated with weak ground by drilling and driving cement piles. But so far, only one lot has the ground. The remaining two lots are waiting for the handover of the ground. If we receive the ground this week, we will add two more cement drilling lines, and combine overtime and extra shifts, and it is expected that 50,000 meters of cement piles will be completed in a month. However, the biggest concern is still the weather,” said engineer Trung.

The workload was large, and the construction time was urgent within 180 days. During the construction process, the contractors had the initiative to weld large-sized mobile roofs to protect the sun and rain at newly poured concrete locations. This method helped the units to fully arrange outdoor work teams with the spirit of "3 shifts, 4 crews" regardless of sun or rain. However, the recent storms No. 5 and No. 10 severely damaged these systems.

According to worker Mai Xuan Dao, each welding team of M350 concrete steel frames works hard, each shift can produce 16 frames. The job looks simple but requires continuous welding for many hours, many days, greatly affecting health. However, thanks to the company's attention and thoughtful care, the brothers can work with peace of mind.

Field supervision consultant Hoang Van Hung (Central Institute) said: "Technically, the construction of the taxiway and apron system is not difficult, because it is mainly poured with cement concrete and reinforced concrete. However, the level of meticulousness and thoroughness and accuracy is required almost absolutely."

For example, the foundation after cement pile reinforcement to prevent subsidence will be spread with crushed stone. The test must reach the required K98 strength before pouring concrete. Cement concrete outside of grade M150 and M350 must ensure zero slump, concrete hardness; the surface after pouring must be at the correct elevation, elevation, surface roughness... In addition, it is necessary to spray enough moisture throughout the 14-month concrete curing period. Therefore, the supervising consultant must always be on duty at the site.

According to engineer Nguyen Minh Viet - project management officer, up to this point, 6 contractors in the project have all achieved the set progress. Of which, the runway has constructed 1.9km of 2-layer concrete, equivalent to 70%. The remaining part is about 500m of weak soil, the units are focusing on reinforcing. It is expected that concrete will start pouring this October...

"There are still 2 parking lots left, and the Air Defense - Air Force is expected to hand them over in the next few days. We have instructed the contractor to prepare drilling lines for making cement piles, so that as soon as we receive the handover, we can start working immediately to catch up with the progress of other items," said engineer Viet.

Regarding the terminal expansion project, the reinforced concrete part to fill the 5 existing ventilation holes has been completed. The two contractors are focusing on making glass walls and partitions. The output value reached 24.3 billion VND, equivalent to 40%. "Although the project contract requires completion by December 31, we are determined and have committed to the leaders of the Ministry of Construction and the leaders of Nghe An province to basically complete the items before December 19, so that the airport can resume operations sooner than expected," engineer Viet expressed his determination.
