Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has just assigned the Ministry of Construction to preside over and coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to direct the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to study and agree on a plan to implement the project to extend the existing runway at Vinh International Airport according to the proposal of the People's Committee of Nghe An province.
Currently, Vinh International Airport (Vinh Airport) has only one runway 2,400m long, 45m wide, and is only capable of handling narrow-body aircraft such as A320/A321 (code C aircraft) or equivalent.
Meanwhile, to be able to receive and operate wide-body aircraft capable of long-haul flights, often used for international or transcontinental flights such as Boeing 787, 777 or Airbus A350 (code E aircraft), the runway needs to be extended to 3,000m.
From July 1 to December 31, 2025, Vinh airport will temporarily suspend all flight operations to serve 3 major infrastructure renovation and upgrade projects invested by ACV, including: Repairing runways and taxiways; renovating and expanding aircraft parking lots; renovating passenger terminal T1.
However, the current runway repair project is only limited to the existing length of 2,400m, with a total investment of 623.4 billion VND.
To remove the key bottleneck to upgrade the exploitation capacity, Nghe An Provincial People's Committee has proposed to allow investment to extend the runway by 600m, increasing the total length to 3,000m. The goal is to ensure the ability to exploit code E aircraft on long routes, in line with the future development plan of Vinh International Airport.

In the latest document, the Government Office conveyed the direction of Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, assigning the Ministry of Construction to preside over and coordinate with the Ministry of Finance to direct ACV to study the proposal of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee, and agree on a plan to implement the runway extension project in accordance with legal regulations.
Previously, the Ministry of Construction also approved the investment policy to extend Vinh airport's runway by 600m, based on the proposal of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee to meet the needs of developing modern aviation infrastructure, qualified to receive large aircraft in the coming period.
In the Master Plan for the development of the national airport system for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 648/QD-TTg dated June 7, 2023, Vinh International Airport is a level 4E airport; with a capacity of about 8 million passengers/year by 2030; land area of 557.33 hectares. Estimated investment cost is 14,942 billion VND.
Vision to 2050: Capacity of about 14 million passengers/year, land area of 557.33 hectares, estimated investment cost of VND 8,905 billion.
Regarding detailed planning, the Ministry of Transport approved the planning of Vinh International Airport in Decision No. 201/QD-BGTVT dated February 19, 2025 as a level 4E airport, specifically:
Period 2021-2030: Expand terminal T1 to reach 5 million passengers/year and plan terminal T2 between the two runways to reach 3 million passengers/year, increasing the total capacity to 8 million passengers/year and 25,000 tons of cargo; code C and code E aircraft; extend the existing runway (runway 1) to 3,000m in size; parallel taxiway 180m from the center of the existing runway; apron reaches about 15 code C positions.
Vision to 2050: Construct runway 2 with dimensions of 3000x45m, east of the existing runway; expand the aircraft parking area of terminal T2 to 29 positions; expand passenger terminal T2 to a capacity of about 9.0 million passengers/year, bringing the total capacity of the entire port to about 14 million passengers/year; expand the cargo terminal to 35,000 tons/year.
