With a high school grade point average (GPA) of 9.08 and a total training score of 94, the male student received a certificate of merit from the Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

Overcoming "the barrier" with will and curiosity
Coming from a physics major, Hoang Trung had almost no knowledge of programming, nor did he have a solid foundation in algorithms. However, the male student had a special passion for science.
He came to the field of artificial intelligence with curiosity and the belief that new fields of study would open up many different opportunities. It was that novelty and challenge that urged this young man to embark on exploration , even though he knew that the road ahead would not be easy.
Entering the industry with a low starting point, Trung focused on solid fundamental subjects such as math, introductory programming, data structures and algorithms.
Outside of school hours, he diligently studies online and reads foreign documents. Finally, his GPA of 9.08 is the result of a systematic path and the student's efforts to overcome himself.

During his time at university, there were also many stumbles that he will remember forever. That was when studying computer networking, a subject that is inherently difficult and dry.
Before the final exam, Trung worked hard on his homework but subjectively ignored the theory part. As a result, he got most of the theory questions wrong and his score was much lower than expected.
Sharing the reason, Trung said that he was too confident and thought he could “skip” to pass this subject. That failure became a wake-up call, reminding him that no subject can be taken lightly, only a serious and thorough learning attitude can bring real results.
For Trung, the subject of data structures and algorithms (DSA) was the biggest challenge. Without a solid programming foundation, Trung was “overwhelmed” by complex concepts and structures such as trees, graphs, pointers, and recursion.
“I had no choice but to start over from the beginning, practicing each lesson until I understood the essence. Patience was the key to overcoming it,” Trung confided.
Research footprint and pioneering aspirations
Trung’s tireless efforts paid off. In his third year, a major turning point came when Hoang Trung was invited by Dr. Le Kim Hung to join the Intelligent Edge Computing research group. For Trung, this was a great opportunity and also an acknowledgement of his quiet efforts.
Here, Trung was exposed to a professional yet challenging academic environment, where he learned how to conduct systematic scientific research, from generating ideas to publishing international articles.
The sleepless nights with his teachers and friends, especially the times of “running the clock during Tet” for his first paper, were not only profound memories but also trained Trung in perseverance and the spirit of cooperation. As a result, he had 3 papers accepted at international conferences.

In addition, Trung also achieved many outstanding achievements such as: First prize in the "Youth with Marxist-Leninist Science and Ho Chi Minh Thought" Contest in 2023, Typical young party member for the period 2022-2024, two consecutive years of winning the title of "5 Good Students" and "Advanced Youth following Uncle Ho's teachings".
As a first-year student majoring in AI, Trung was often confused by the lack of direction from his predecessors. “At first, I was confused, but I saw it as an opportunity to explore and shape my own path. There was no set path, so I had to proactively explore and learn from many sources,” he said.
This helps Trung practice self-learning skills, independent thinking and quick adaptation, which are the core qualities of an AI engineer.
Trung always considers himself lucky to have the support of those around him. His family is his greatest spiritual support, always believing in and supporting all his decisions. Teachers not only impart knowledge but also give him important opportunities and directions on the path of research.
Besides, close friends are valuable companions, studying together, sharing pressure and creating a strong support network to progress together.
Currently, Trung is researching AI model security while pursuing a master's degree at the University of Natural Sciences. In the next 5-10 years, Trung aims to win a doctoral scholarship to continue his in-depth research.
His biggest dream is to make contributions that bridge academic research and practical technology applications. Trung hopes to one day return to the school he has been attached to, contributing to building a sustainable AI training orientation, helping future generations of students take a more favorable step.
For Trung, a diploma is not a destination, but just the beginning of a long journey, full of aspirations and new challenges.
