Nghe An folk songs are not only simple and profound melodies but also the breath and soul of the land and people here.

Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2014), Ví and Giặm are facing the challenges of the times. Many artisans, young people, clubs and art troupes in Nghệ An have been making efforts to keep this precious source flowing and resounding in modern life.

Young generation loves wallet and giặm

For the past half month, the Vi and Giam folk song teaching class for gifted students in the community organized by Nghe An Province Traditional Arts Center has been filled with sounds and laughter. During the 12 days of the course, the students have learned more about the characteristics and nature of Vi and Giam melodies, practiced Vi and Giam melodies, Ho melodies, and modified melodies...

Having won prizes in many provincial-level Vi and Giam folk singing competitions, with their passion and love for Vi and Giam, two brothers Nguyen Cong Anh (14 years old) and Nguyen Cong Minh (9 years old), Kim Lien commune, continue to pursue and study folk singing seriously.

By attending the class, I was taught by artists and teachers who are professional actors, from which I gained a deeper understanding of all the ancient folk melodies as well as how to develop folk song singing.

“After a period of study, I feel that I have made great progress in my perception and singing of folk songs such as Ho Chuoi, Ho Dep De, Tu Hoa, Giam Xam... Through the teachings of the teachers, we not only learn knowledge and performance skills but also deeply feel the value of our homeland's traditional culture,” Cong Anh shared.

Having loved singing Vi and Giam folk songs since childhood, Hoang Tra My (16 years old) joined the class to better understand the techniques of the melodies, how to sing them in accordance with the character's personality and the content of the work.

Tra My shared that she feels happy when she is immersed in the soulful, salty sounds of traditional songs. She is always proud and deeply aware of the responsibility to preserve and promote the precious heritage left by her ancestors. Therefore, she wants to pass on her love of folk songs to young people, to raise awareness and responsibility in preserving and promoting the value of Nghe Tinh folk song heritage through the activities of the Club at school that she is in charge of. In the long term, she wants to become a professional artist in the future, Tra My confided.

To preserve and promote the values of Nghe Tinh folk song heritage, for the past 4 years, Nghe An province has opened classes to teach Vi and Giam folk songs to gifted students in primary and secondary schools in the area. The 36 students participating in today's class were selected from 130 communes and wards in the province. They are students who are truly passionate and talented in Vi and Giam folk songs.

Organizing classes to teach folk singing talent, aiming to guide and teach gifted students from primary to high school age to grasp basic melodies; searching, orienting training, nurturing talents to create a source of actors for professional art units and the core of art for local movements.

Under the dedicated guidance of experienced and enthusiastic artists and lecturers, students are introduced to a systematic and lively system of rich melodies of Nghe Tinh folk songs, from ancient melodies such as Vi phuong vai Truong Luu, Vi do dua song Lam, Giam ve, Ho khoan di duong, ho boi thuyen, ho tren song... to the modified melodies Hat quyen, Tu hoa, Xam thap an and works with new lyrics of high artistic and educational value.

Musician Tran Quoc Chung, Director of the Provincial Traditional Arts Center, happily expressed that in just a short time of studying, the children confidently performed performances with high technical and emotional requirements. This is not only the result of days of hard work studying but also a vivid proof of the ability to receive, create and spread folk songs among the young generation. The old songs, lyrics and melodies are renewed by the children with pure souls, full of love and youthful vitality. This is also a positive sign for the future of traditional arts.

Preserve and maintain folk songs

The preservation of the Vi and Giam is not only limited to preservation but also promoted in contemporary life. In the community, artisans directly teach their children and grandchildren, the younger generation in their families, villages, and clubs.

People's Artist Vo Thi Hong Van, Head of the Ngoc Son Vi and Giam Folk Song Club, Xuan Lam Commune, is well-known in the movement to spread Vi and Giam folk songs in Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces. In recent years, she has opened many classes to recruit children from all over the region to teach folk songs. Her students can be children as young as 10 years old, but there are also those who are in their teens and young adults. All come to her class with a passion for folk songs and a spirit of learning. Therefore, even though it is only a short time of 10-15 sessions, the children can grasp many folk songs of Nghe An.

According to People's Artist Hong Van, to open a folk singing class, the instructor must have prestige, teaching experience, and the ability to spread the singing and melodies in the community. As the Club's Director, Artist Hong Van researches and collects original melodies, sets up the program, researches props, sets up the performance scene, and practices singing for members...

In recent times, schools in Nghe An have included Vi and Giam folk songs in their extracurricular education programs and experiential activities at schools, helping students to access and spread them early. Vi and Giam folk song clubs in localities also organize regular activities, practice, perform, exchange, and teach to the community. Nghe An province regularly organizes festivals, performances, Vi and Giam folk song performances in localities, traditional festivals, and cultural events. From there, art troupes and folk song clubs have the opportunity to learn, exchange, and share experiences.

The Provincial Traditional Arts Center has many solutions to continue and develop Vi and Giam in the modern context. Researchers and collectors have devoted much effort to recording and systematizing melodies and lyrics, contributing to preserving the heritage in writing. Along with that, technology is applied, digitizing documents on Vi and Giam (recording audio, video of melodies, lyrics, research documents).

Meritorious Artist Ta Duong, Head of the Research and Collection Department, Provincial Traditional Arts Center, said that the Center is building communication channels and social networks to promote Vi and Giam to the general public, especially the youth. The Center continues to conduct more in-depth research on the origin, value and variations of Vi and Giam, thereby publishing books of lyrics, melodies and research documents to widely disseminate to the public. The State and authorities at all levels need to have policies to encourage and provide financial support for artisans, folk song clubs and conservation activities.

Besides efforts, the process of preserving Vi and Giam faces many challenges. These include the risk of extinction due to the decreasing number of older generations of artists, the lack of interest from the younger generation, operating costs, practice locations, costumes, musical instruments, etc.; the lack of successors, not only singers but also composers, researchers, and organizers of activities related to Vi and Giam.

Ms. Quach Thi Cuong, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that Vi and Giam are not only the heritage of Nghe An but also the cultural assets of humanity. Preserving Vi and Giam means preserving the identity and soul of the nation. The industry is researching and has a specific roadmap to turn Vi and Giam folk songs into tourism products to spread the value of the heritage./.
