Captain of Vietnam volleyball team Thanh Thuy promises to shine in Japan

Aspiration to pursue professional volleyball

Tran Thi Thanh Thuy is a rare top Vietnamese athlete who has competed abroad in many places. 10 years ago, when she was only 17 years old, she went to Thailand to play for Bangkok Glass Club in the number 1 volleyball team in Southeast Asia. In the 2017-2018 season, Thanh Thuy had a new experience when playing for Attack Line Club in the Taiwan Volleyball Tournament. 2019 marked a new step in Thanh Thuy's career when she joined Denso Airybees Club to compete in the top volleyball team in the continent, Japan. The period from 2021 to 2024 is considered the peak of Thanh Thuy's career when she played many times for PFU BlueCats Club in the Japanese tournament. However, injuries have made it difficult for her to regain her form, so she has not left an impression when she joined Kuzeyboru Club in Türkiye and Gresik Petrokimia (Indonesia) in the past year. Not giving up her desire to pursue professional volleyball, Thanh Thuy accepted an invitation to return to the Japanese volleyball league, joining the Gunma Green Wings Club this season.

Mr. Le Tri Truong, General Secretary of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation (VFV), said that Thanh Thuy is an athlete with a clear will, desire and goals. Her management unit, VTV Binh Dien Long An Club, has also created the best conditions for her to compete abroad and develop her career. Within its capacity, VFV also supports Thanh Thuy to quickly complete the procedures. In addition, the leaders of VTV Binh Dien Long An Club have repeatedly affirmed that the team may reduce its chances of competing without Thanh Thuy, but are always ready to let her compete abroad because this is not only good for the athlete herself but also for Vietnamese volleyball.

Thanh Thuy returns to her favorite position

On October 12, Thanh Thuy will play with Gunma Green Wings in the opening match of the Japanese volleyball tournament, against Queenseis Kariya Club. Thanh Thuy has been training with Gunma Green Wings for over a month in preparation for this year's season.

Previously, when playing for PFU BlueCats Club, main striker Thanh Thuy was placed in the left-back position. This time at Gunma Green Wings Club, she was back to playing the main striker position. In the recent friendly matches of Gunma Green Wings Club and training sessions, Thanh Thuy was placed in the main striker position by the coaching staff. Therefore, many comments said that she will be placed in the main striker position for Gunma Green Wings Club.

With a height of 1.90 m, Thanh Thuy is the athlete with the most ideal physique of Gunma Green Wings Club this season, better than the two remaining foreign players in the team, Nasya Dimitrova (Bulgaria) and Olivia Rozanski (Poland). More importantly, Thanh Thuy shows that she is regaining good form since her injury in early 2024. The strong jumps, powerful and effective smashes that Thanh Thuy showed in the last training session promise to be promoted when she joins Gunma Green Wings Club in the new season.

The coaching staff of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team also follows Thanh Thuy's journey in Japan with the hope that she will return to her peak form. Because in December, Thanh Thuy and the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will conquer the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. This is the SEA Games in which the Vietnamese women's volleyball team, with a balanced squad of players, aims to overthrow the dominance of the Thai women's volleyball team to win the gold medal for the first time. The fact that Bich Tuyen is likely not to participate in the SEA Games makes Thanh Thuy's role even greater.
