Researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine analyzed data from 48 genetic studies, including about 17,000 stroke patients and nearly 600,000 stroke-free controls. All participants were between the ages of 18 and 59.
The results found that people with blood type A have a 16% higher risk of stroke before the age of 60 than other blood types, according to the science news site Science Alert.

Next is blood type B, with an 11% higher risk of stroke.
In contrast, people with blood type O have a 12% lower risk of stroke.
The study's lead author, vascular neurologist Dr. Steven Kittner from the University of Maryland (USA), explained: The reason people with blood type A have a higher risk of stroke may be due to the formation of blood clots. Clotting factors such as platelets and cells lining blood vessels, as well as other circulating proteins, all play a role in clot formation.
While the study's findings may seem alarming, another important finding may give older adults some peace of mind.
This risk becomes negligible in people over 60 years of age.
Another important finding was the difference between stroke cases before age 60 and after age 60.
The research team used a dataset of about 9,300 people over 60 who had a stroke and about 25,000 control people over 60 who had not had a stroke for comparison.
The results found that the increased risk of stroke in blood type A became insignificant after the age of 60, suggesting that strokes occurring early in life may have a different mechanism than those occurring later, according to Science Alert.
Strokes in young people are less likely to be caused by fatty buildup in the arteries (known as atherosclerosis) and more likely to be caused by factors related to blood clot formation, researchers say.
The results also showed that people with blood type B had an approximately 11% higher risk of stroke than those who did not have a stroke, whether before or after the age of 60.
