Doctor training and criteria for physicians

In recent days, the issue of training in the health sector, including medical specialists, has been a "hot topic" in the National Assembly when discussing the Law on Higher Education (amended). The focus is on the give-and-take content related to the role of state management in training doctors in general and interns, specialists 1 and 2 in particular. This shows that the health sector is highly specific because it is directly related to human life.

In the medical human resources, doctors are a high-quality workforce and residents (those who have graduated from medical universities and are participating in intensive postgraduate training programs in theory and clinical practice under the supervision of experienced experts at leading hospitals) are considered the elite. Therefore, how to manage training, how to design training programs or recognize postgraduate training degrees in the national training degree system requires a multi-dimensional perspective and making appropriate decisions.

However, medical training is a special field, most of the teachers standing on the podium are doctors who are still participating in treating and saving people day and night. Therefore, scientists , professors, doctors at hospitals and medical universities will certainly be the ones with the capacity and qualifications to design the most suitable training program.

Resolution No. 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo on a number of breakthrough solutions to strengthen the protection, care and improvement of people's health has affirmed that specialized training at postgraduate level in the field of health is carried out within the national education system and managed by the Ministry of Health . Therefore, many opinions believe that institutionalizing this content in the Law is an urgent requirement to ensure the unity of the legal system, create a legal basis for implementation, as well as international integration.

To officially participate in examining and treating people, doctors must undergo the most systematic and lengthy training process with a university program along with specialized training and practice to obtain a practice certificate... Six years of training in a university environment is only the end of a journey, just the beginning of a journey ahead with many challenges. Doctors often have to study for 9 years, 12 years, not to mention that during their working career, doctors must continuously study and update their knowledge.

At the graduation ceremony, Professor, Doctor, People's Physician Le Ngoc Thanh, Principal of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hanoi National University) advised young doctors that if they want to become good doctors, respected by society and colleagues, they need to pay attention to six criteria: Honesty in practice, medical ethics is the foundation of the profession; Continuously learning, overcoming personal limits; Preserving and spreading medical ethics, always putting the interests of patients first; Proficient use of foreign languages and technology, so as not to fall behind in the digital age; Physical and mental care, because doctors need health to care for others; Responsibility to the community, not only treating diseases but also being an inspiration, supporting society to overcome difficulties.

The country is entering a new stage of development, and the medical industry is also witnessing profound changes after the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, every medical staff in general and doctor in particular needs to constantly study and improve their knowledge to work, contribute and become good doctors, experts and scientists of the country.
