[Photo] Dan Mountain Ginseng, a precious gift from nature to Kinh Bac land

Starting from a story passed down from generation to generation on the top of Chung Son mountain (now Danh mountain), Phuc Hoa commune, Bac Ninh province, the Southern ginseng plant, once known as the "royal ginseng", has now strongly revived, becoming a typical product, bringing high economic value to this land.

As a precious gift from nature, Danh mountain ginseng is considered a "miracle drug" that helps people maintain health and improve the quality of life. According to the analysis results of the Institute of Medicinal Materials ( Ministry of Health ), saponin - a precious active ingredient in Danh mountain ginseng, reaches 8.11%, almost equal to Ngoc Linh ginseng (10%) and nearly 3 times higher than Korean ginseng (3.5%). This product helps increase resistance, improve the immune system, and prevent diseases.

Thanks to the standardization of planting and care processes, in 2020, the Intellectual Property Office granted a geographical indication certificate under the name "Nam Dan Mountain Ginseng". In 2022, the product achieved 4-star OCOP certification, as an affirmation of the significance and importance of this ginseng variety in the socio-economic development of Bac Ninh province.

Mr. Nguyen Van Dien in Lan Tranh 1 village, Phuc Hoa commune, Bac Ninh province shared: "The process of propagating ginseng must use alluvial soil and propagate by grafting, potting and care."

The successfully grafted branches are taken to be incubated. The strange thing is that ginseng plants are not damaged by rats like potatoes and cassava.

After the tree has grown, it will be cut into the pot and planted on well-drained soil, especially on hills and gravel which will be suitable for the growth of ginseng.

Dan Mountain Ginseng needs stable humidity, especially in the early stages of development. Therefore, an automatic irrigation system is very important to keep the soil moist, avoiding drought or waterlogging.

In the second year, the tree pruning stage begins. At this stage, people can collect ginseng leaves, dry them, and classify them into tea leaves to sell for 150,000 VND/kg of tea. Lower quality leaves will be brought back and crushed to feed livestock.

In the third year of ginseng flower blooming season, people start harvesting ginseng flowers from September to October of the solar calendar. The quantity of flowers harvested is about 350 kg/sao of land and sold to the market at 800 thousand VND/kg to make flower tea.

The high value of Danh Mountain Ginseng is due to the fact that the plant is fertilized with organic fertilizer, not sprayed with pesticides, and has a high saponin content which is very good for health.

After about 5 years, the ginseng roots will be of good quality and will be harvested. The ginseng is classified by weight and sliced ​​to be processed into ginseng wine and ginseng tea products.

After being sliced, ginseng will be dried for longer preservation. Ginseng growers will have to disinfect it with alcohol to prevent ginseng roots with high sugar content from being crushed and easily fermented.

Identifying the potential of precious ginseng, Phuc Hoa commune (Bac Ninh) has implemented the Project to develop Nam Nui Danh ginseng in the period of 2022-2027. Up to now, the planting area has reached about 150 hectares; in 2024 alone, nearly 20 hectares will yield 30 tons of tubers, more than 100 hectares will yield flowers with a yield of about 1 ton/hectare.
