Hoang A Tuong Palace (also known as Meo King Palace) was started construction in 1914 and completed in 1921, and was once the center of power of the Hoang family - one of the famous families in Bac Ha, Lao Cai .

After more than a century of rain and sun, the structure had seriously degraded. By the end of 2023, the restoration project was implemented by Lao Cai province with the goal of preserving its original values to the maximum.

After nearly a year of construction, the mansion now has a new look with milky white painted walls, meticulously restored motifs and patterns... appearing majestic and imposing amidst the majestic mountain scenery of the white plateau of Bac Ha.

The mansion is now painted mainly in milky white (traditional lime color), combined with details of the baseboards and decorative motifs in blue-gray and brick red.

The building has a total area of about 10,000 m², including 36 rooms, arranged in a continuous rectangular shape. Around the wall are loopholes and patrol roads on the ramparts, demonstrating the smart defense of the Hoang A Tuong family.

Behind the mansion, under two ancient Moc Huong trees remaining from the time of the previous owner, is an escape tunnel. This is considered a mark of the careful calculation and strategy of the Meo King in protecting the mansion.

The interior space is also arranged to serve visitors.

The first floor displays household items such as tables, chairs, looms, rice mills, and drums, helping to recreate the daily life of a powerful local family.

On the wall hangs old family photos, reminding of the powerful past of the Meo King.

The second floor is dedicated to introducing costumes and cultural artifacts of the ethnic groups in Bac Ha, turning this place into a "living museum" in the heart of the relic.

“I came here more than 10 years ago, when the mansion was damp and moldy, with many details blurred. Looking back now, the walls are white, the restored motifs are clear, and the space is much more majestic. You can see the obvious difference after the restoration,” a tourist from Hanoi shared.

According to research, the recent restoration is only phase 1. The next phase of the project will focus on restoring the watchtowers, expanding the rear campus and developing tourism products, documentaries, and books, aiming to turn the mansion into a center for experiencing the culture and history of the highlands.
