On October 2, Japanese electronics giant Hitachi and US-based OpenAI signed a memorandum of understanding for strategic cooperation to build artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and expand data centers globally. The goal is to accelerate the development of generative AI while reducing energy consumption costs.
At the heart of this partnership is Hitachi's provision of power transmission and distribution equipment for AI data centers.
ChatGPT developer OpenAI is driving Project Stargate, the $500 billion AI infrastructure project announced by US President Donald Trump in January 2025, along with SoftBank Group and cloud computing company Oracle. OpenAI will build new data centers around the world , including in the UK and the Middle East.
Developing generative AI models requires huge amounts of electricity because it involves running graphics processing units in data centers. Hitachi will not be directly involved in Stargate, but will contribute to the project through this collaboration.
Hitachi owns technologies that can help improve the energy efficiency of data centers, specifically products such as power transmission and distribution equipment like transformers, as well as air conditioning and cooling technology.
OpenAI will continue to develop its generative AI model, while integrating Hitachi's energy-saving technologies and is considering sourcing IT equipment such as storage systems from the Japanese conglomerate.
OpenAI will provide its large language model (LLM) to Hitachi, which plans to integrate the technology into its Lumada digital platform and explore usage strategies./.
