Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University becomes female academician of the World Academy of Sciences

(NLDO) - Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Artist Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City National University, has just received a certificate of recognition as an Academician of the World Academy of Sciences in Brazil.

At the 17th Conference of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), taking place from September 29 to October 2 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Vice President of VNU-HCM, was officially recognized as a TWAS Academician through the new member reception ceremony.

This year, TWAS elected 74 new members, the most in the history of TWAS. Brazil and China lead with 10 members, followed by India (9), Malaysia (7), South Africa (4), Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt and the United States each with 2 representatives. The recognition decision takes effect from January 1, 2025, bringing the total number of TWAS members to 1,444.

At the conference, Professor, Doctor, Meritorious Service Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai and Major General, Professor, Doctor, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang - former Deputy Director of 108 Central Military Hospital were honored to receive the Certificate of Official Academicianship of TWAS from Professor, Doctor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai was born in 1974, from Quang Ngai , graduated in Chemistry from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now University of Science - VNU-HCM), was awarded the title of Associate Professor in 2014 and Professor in 2020.

She is a leading scientist in the research of medicines from Vietnamese medicinal herbs, with many important contributions to the pharmaceutical industry. Her research team has successfully developed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis from domestic medicinal herbs.

To date, the female Vice President of VNU-HCM has published more than 80 prestigious international articles. With her contributions, she has received many noble awards such as Certificates of Merit from the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Education and Training , the "For the cause of education" Medal, and the Kovalevskaia Award - a noble award for female scientists in the field of natural sciences.

TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences) is an international organization under UNESCO, established in 1983, bringing together more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from more than 100 countries.

The organization was officially recognized by United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar in 1985 and is currently an associate member of the International Science Council (ISC).
