Dfarm - where sweet seasons grow from kind agriculture

When high-tech agriculture was still unfamiliar in Quang Tri, Ms. Tran Thu Trang stepped out of her 'comfort zone' to build Dfarm in an organic, circular direction.

Step out of your 'comfort zone'

In 2020, while working as an agricultural land official, Ms. Tran Thu Trang (Vinh Giang commune, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province, now Cua Tung commune, Quang Tri province) surprised many people when she quit her job to invest in opening a high-tech agricultural farm.

“In my idea, it will be an organic, natural, circular agricultural model. Agricultural by-products and manure will be combined with microorganisms to become fertilizer to produce melons, cantaloupes and organic vegetables. My goal is to create an environmentally friendly production model that is good for the health of producers as well as consumers,” Ms. Trang shared.

After visiting many models in the provinces, Ms. Trang raised capital from a number of young people passionate about organic agriculture. With the initial 4 billion VND, she built 11 greenhouses with a total area of 5,500 m2 in Dong Soi village, Kim Thach commune (now Cua Tung commune). Most of the materials to build greenhouses were imported by Ms. Trang from the US, Japan and Israel. In mid-2020, Dfarm farm officially went into operation with a drip irrigation system and automatic fertilizer injection using Israeli technology.

Up to now, each year, Dfarm farm produces 2.5 crops, in a rolling manner. The average yield of grade 1 melons and cantaloupes is 15 tons/year, grade 2 fruit is 6 tons/year; winter vegetables yield 1.5 tons/crop.

Ms. Trang said that cantaloupe and honeydew melon are "difficult" plants that are very sensitive to the environment and difficult to produce organically. However, at Dfarm, the melons still have beautiful, uniform fruit shape and high sweetness.

In 2021, Dfarm's melon products met Vietnam's organic standards and were popular in the markets of Quang Tri and Hanoi provinces. In addition to melons, the farm also produces organic vegetables, which are consumed well in and outside the province. Dfarm's total revenue reached 1.4 billion VND/year; creating regular jobs for 8 local workers.

“If you want others to trust you, you have to be truly trustworthy. Dfarm agricultural products are organic, from seeds to farming methods. Many steps in the care process at the farm have been automated. What I care about most is that advanced farming methods will contribute to protecting the environment and change the mindset of both farmers and consumers,” Trang shared.

Opportunities for decent farmers

Ms. Trang left an impression on us with her simple, friendly demeanor. Although she is the farm owner, she is also the main worker - the one who initiates all ideas and directly guides each stage. She always considers her employees as partners and encourages them to pursue decent agriculture. Attached to the farm, every noon and afternoon after work, she walks around each greenhouse, watching the melons and vegetable beds grow under the soft light of the farm.

Taking us to see the automatic irrigation system, she said that with just a gentle movement, all 10 greenhouses will be supplied with drip irrigation water, and the amount of nutrients is also programmed for each stage.

“High-tech agriculture is not as easy as many people think. If you want to succeed quickly and earn a high income immediately, this is not the choice,” Ms. Trang frankly said.

Her spirit is "passed on" to the agricultural engineers and young workers working at Dfarm. The Farm's colleagues are also full of enthusiasm when they have a boss who is passionate about clean agriculture. Many students after graduating from agricultural schools, instead of looking for attractive jobs with promotion opportunities, come to Dfarm. They meet because of the same passion.

“Doing agriculture at Dfarm is no different from doing ecotourism. Every day, seeing clean products made by myself reach consumers, I tell myself to make more valuable things for society,” agricultural engineer Le Thi Hiep confided.

After 5 years of starting a business, what makes Ms. Trang happiest is the change in the production mindset of the team, especially the transformation of consumers. If in 2020, retail customers could be counted on the fingers, now this customer group accounts for 50-60% of Dfarm's consumption output.

“Products from Dfarm are often more expensive than traditionally produced agricultural products on the market. However, our retail customers have increased rapidly and steadily. There are more and more smart consumers, which is an opportunity for decent farmers,” Ms. Trang said excitedly.

After 5 years of starting her business with Dfarm, Ms. Tran Thu Trang was honored to receive a Certificate of Merit from the People's Committee of Quang Tri province for her outstanding achievements in agricultural production. In 2025, Ms. Trang was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Minister of Agriculture and Environment for her outstanding achievements in implementing patriotic emulation movements in the period of 2021-2025.
