Strong cold air is about to sweep down to the North

From November 17, the coldest air mass since the beginning of the season will flow down, causing the lowest temperature in the North to be below 5 degrees Celsius, and heavy rain in the Central region.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said the cold air mass is moving down, on November 17 it will first reach the Northeast, then expand to the plains and Northwest, causing showers and thunderstorms.

The American website Accuweather forecasts that today Hanoi will have temperatures of 21-28 degrees Celsius, then gradually decrease to 14-18 degrees by the middle of next week. High points above 1,500 meters such as Sa Pa (Lao Cai) will be the coldest next Wednesday, down to 5-10 degrees Celsius.

The North Central region will also be affected by cold air from November 17, with the lowest temperature commonly ranging from 12-15 degrees Celsius, and in mountainous areas below 10 degrees Celsius.

Cold air combined with disturbances in the easterly wind zone will cause heavy rain from Ha Tinh to Khanh Hoa. Total rainfall from the night of November 15 to the end of the night of November 18 in Hue, Da Nang , eastern Quang Ngai and Gia Lai is generally 300-600 mm, locally over 800 mm.

From Ha Tinh to Quang Tri, the east of Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa provinces, rain is 150-300 mm, locally over 500 mm; from the west of Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, rain is 100-200 mm, locally over 350 mm.

In addition to the decrease in temperature and rain, the cold air will also cause strong northeast winds of level 3-4 on land and level 4-5 on the coast.

At sea, from the afternoon of November 17, the wind in the Gulf of Tonkin will be level 7-8, gusting to level 9, with waves 3-5 m high. The wind in the North East Sea will be level 7-8, gusting to level 9-10, with waves 4-6 m high. From November 18, from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai, the wind will be level 6-7, gusting to level 8-9, with waves 4-6 m high.

The meteorological agency warned that this cold spell is likely to cause frost, affecting livestock, poultry, and the growth and development of crops. Heavy rains are likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas; flash floods in small rivers and streams, and landslides on steep slopes. Heavy rain in a short period of time can cause flooding in urban and industrial areas.
