Hue promotes digitization and promotes the value of Han Nom documentary heritage

Hue City is one of the localities that still preserves many valuable, unique Han Nom documents, rare documents written by kings of various dynasties. According to researchers, the Han Nom heritage formed and preserved in Hue, the last capital of the Vietnamese monarchy, is very rich and massive. However, due to many different reasons, these valuable documents are facing the risk of damage and loss.

Over the past years, the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City has directed the City General Library to coordinate with units, researchers, and the community to collect, digitize, and promote the value of Han Nom documents.

To date, nearly 500,000 Han-Nom documents have been collected, classified and digitized - forming a massive source of documents with special scientific value. From that achievement, many research, compilation and publication projects have been deployed, contributing to affirming the important role of Han-Nom heritage in the academic and cultural life of Hue.

After being collected, digitized, and restored, Han Nom heritage documents will be displayed and introduced to the public.

In order to continue collecting and supplementing rare Han Nom documents in the area and effectively promoting the collected and preserved Han Nom documents, the People's Committee of Hue City has issued a plan on collecting, digitizing, preserving, restoring and promoting the value of these documents in the city in the period 2026 - 2030.

According to the plan, the collection, digitization, transcription, translation and restoration of rare documents will be carried out, in order to preserve them for a long time and serve the needs of scholars, students and those interested in Hue history and culture. The documents are classified, cataloged and preserved according to modern library principles.

In particular, focusing on the application of information technology and the construction of a digital Han Nom database of Hue City. This is a necessary step to bring Han Nom heritage into the digital environment, creating favorable conditions for searching, accessing and exploiting. In addition, the city will also organize training and guidance on preservation and restoration of documents for library staff and document owners at the grassroots level, in order to improve professional capacity and awareness of heritage protection in the community.

Hue also aims to promote in-depth research and academic cooperation at home and abroad; encourage works that exploit academic depth from Han Nom documents to serve research on history, culture, customary law, village customs and other fields of social sciences.

According to Director of the Department of Culture and Sports of Hue City Phan Thanh Hai, Han Nom heritage is an important source of documents that help today's and future generations have the opportunity to learn more about the historical and cultural roots of the nation. Research, survey, collection and digitization of Han Nom documents in recent times have helped many people understand more deeply about the land of Hue and contributed to the study of the history of Vietnam.

With many efforts from units and localities, the Han Nom documents that clans and villages in Hue are preserving will be collected and introduced more widely, contributing to the work of preserving, maintaining and promoting the cultural and historical values of the Han Nom document heritage.
