On September 10th, information from the People's Committee of Nghe An province indicated that the province had decided to reclaim 67.5 hectares of land in Vinh Phu and Vinh Hung wards and Nghi Loc commune to implement a project to extend the runway of Vinh International Airport by 3 km.
The "Extension of Runway - Vinh International Airport" project, proposed by the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), has a total investment of over 545 billion VND. Its aim is to extend the existing runway by 600 meters, bringing the total length to 3 km, thereby meeting the requirements to accommodate wide-body, long-range aircraft commonly used on international or intercontinental routes, such as the Boeing 787, 777, or Airbus A350.
According to the plan, the project will complete the investment policy procedures and feasibility study report in Q3/2025, approve the construction drawings in Q4/2025, and complete construction within 6 months from the handover of the site.
Extending the runway to 3 km is considered strategically significant, opening up opportunities to attract international flights, increase operating frequency, and elevate the status of Vinh Airport, one of the most important airports in the North Central region.
Currently, Vinh International Airport has only one runway, 2.4 km long and 45 m wide, which is only large enough to accommodate narrow-body aircraft such as the A320/A321 (Code C aircraft) or equivalent.
