Upon arriving at Mr. Tran Duc Mac's hillside in Hong Thai residential area, it's hard to imagine that this place was once a desolate wasteland, overgrown with weeds and devoid of people. Now, that hillside is covered with lush green cinnamon trees, rows of tea plants, a shimmering fish pond, and a well-planned livestock area. All of this is the result of over 40 years of dedication and effort by veteran Tran Duc Mac in his land reclamation efforts.

In 1983, after returning from the war, Mr. Tran Duc Mac and his family decided to reclaim land in what was then a desolate area. He still remembers the difficult early days, when the land was barren, overgrown with weeds, and farming depended entirely on the weather. His family could only plant cassava and bamboo to prevent soil erosion and earn a small income to sustain their lives.
Despite the difficulties, his "Ho Chi Minh's Soldier" spirit wouldn't let him falter. Driven by a desire to take control of the land, Mr. Mac persistently transformed unproductive rice paddies into fish ponds, while also experimenting with various crops suitable to the terrain and climate.

During the trial period, Mr. Mac realized that cinnamon trees and Bat Tien tea plants had good growth potential and yielded high economic value. He boldly invested in expanding the area planted with cinnamon, and at the same time became one of the first people in the locality to introduce Bat Tien tea plants. When the model initially showed effectiveness, he continued to plant more fruit trees, combining it with livestock farming to maximize the advantages of the land and the mutual support between different types of production.
Looking back on his journey to build his business, Mr. Mac faced many difficulties. There were times when crops were affected by pests and diseases, causing a sharp drop in yield; livestock were also affected by epidemics, resulting in significant losses. However, each difficulty became a driving force for the veteran to overcome. He proactively researched and studied methods of preventing and treating diseases in crops and livestock; learned techniques from books, documents, and successful models in other localities. He also boldly changed his methods, applying circular production techniques to save costs and minimize risks. As a result, his production model has become increasingly perfected and stable in a sustainable direction.
Mr. Mac shared: "Over the past 40 years, I've faced many difficulties. Even setting foot on this land was a huge challenge for me."
However, it was my passion for gardening, along with my hard work, perseverance, willingness to think outside the box, and readiness to change, that helped me overcome everything.
Thanks to his perseverance and efforts, Mr. Tran Duc Mac's "garden-pond-livestock" model has developed effectively, becoming a significant source of income. Each year, the model brings in approximately 500 million VND for his family. In addition, it provides stable employment for 10-12 local workers with suitable incomes. This contributes to improving the lives of many households and motivates the movement to promote successful production and business practices in the area.
“Now that I’m getting older, my greatest hope is to continue maintaining this model to inspire my children and grandchildren. In addition, as the head of the Veterans Association branch, I also want to actively participate in training sessions and share experiences to spread my passion for agriculture and promote local economic development,” Mr. Mac added.

Commenting on veteran Tran Duc Mac, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huyen, Deputy Head of the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Planning Department of Nam Cuong Ward, affirmed: Mr. Mac is a typical veteran, a pioneer in innovating production thinking, boldly applying technology and setting an example in local movements. His production model not only brings high economic efficiency but also creates livelihoods for many laborers, contributing to building the movement of farmers competing in excellent production.
From a barren wasteland, the area that was once reclaimed has now become a green, stable, and economically valuable production zone thanks to the perseverance, determination, and innovative spirit of veteran Tran Duc Mac. His story is a prime example of overcoming difficulties, a thirst for learning, and a desire to build a prosperous life right in his homeland. The success of his "garden-pond-livestock" model has not only brought about changes for his family but also made a positive impact on the community, contributing to affirming the role of the modern farmer – dynamic, creative, and always ready to adapt to become wealthy.
