The journal Nature has just published its list of 10 outstanding scientists for 2025. Among them, Liang Wenfeng, the man behind the DeepSeek AI model, was named with the description "a technology disruptor." Nature stated that his recognition stems from the transformative impact of the DeepSeek model on the artificial intelligence industry over the past year.
According to the journal, DeepSeek made its mark thanks to its performance optimization strategy, which significantly reduced the operating costs of AI models and enhanced China's position in the field. Nature emphasized that DeepSeek challenged the long-held assumption in the AI industry that high performance does not necessarily require massive amounts of data or expensive server infrastructure.
Recently, DeepSeek released the open-source code for its V3.2 model. According to information from its official Weibo account, it achieved the highest performance among open-source models in reviews related to Agents, a rapidly growing trend in the AI field.
Luong Van Phong was born in 1985 in Wuchuan (Zhanjiang, Guangdong). At the age of 17, he was admitted to Zhejiang University, majoring in Electronic Information Engineering. During his university years, he actively participated in mathematics competitions and gradually gained recognition in academic circles. He then pursued postgraduate studies at Zhejiang University, researching machine vision under the guidance of Professor Xiang Zhiyu.

In 2008, after graduating, Liang entered the field of quantitative investing, which was still very new in China at the time. The introduction of the CSI 300 futures contract in 2010 opened a period of rapid development for the country with the world's largest population. According to publicly available information, his team quickly seized this opportunity and accumulated more than 500 million yuan (US$70 million) in proprietary trading funds.
By 2023, as large-scale models emerged following the boost from ChatGPT, Magic Square Quant established an independent organization called DeepSeek, aiming to develop general artificial intelligence (AGI). This also marked the beginning of a new chapter for Luong Van Phong in the field of AI.
