Initial results of the model for addressing cadmium contamination in durian growing areas.

(DTO) On the afternoon of December 11th, in Long Tien commune, Dong Thap province, the Crop Production and Plant Protection Sub-Department - Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Thap province organized a workshop "Evaluating the results of implementing the model to remedy durian growing areas contaminated with Cadmium".

Accordingly, to control food safety in durian-growing areas for export, the Sub-Department of Information and Plant Protection, in coordination with Can Tho University, Thien Tam Agricultural Products Trading Co., Ltd., Mai Anh Dong Thap Co., Ltd., and TH Food Chain Joint Stock Company, will implement a model applying solutions to address cadmium contamination in durian-growing areas in Long Tien commune in 2025.

The model will be implemented in a Ri 6 durian orchard belonging to a household in Hamlet 16, Long Tien Commune, covering an area of ​​0.5 hectares. The implementation period is from January 20, 2025 to November 30, 2025.

The model implements 5 solutions to address cadmium contamination (each solution applied to an area of ​​0.1 ha), including: Solution 1 is cultivation using integrated intensive farming techniques for durian trees in the Southern provinces (using fertilizers with or without extremely low cadmium content); Solution 1 + planting mint; Solution 1 + biological products; Solution 1 + activated charcoal; Solution 1 + biological products + activated charcoal.

All fertilizer products (organic and inorganic) are tested for cadmium content before being used in the model.

Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection   and Long Tien commune conducted a survey at the durian orchard implementing the model.

At the workshop, the Plant Protection and Quarantine Sub-Department provided specific information on the results of the indicators over the period of applying the solutions.

Accordingly, after the implementation period, the results of the monitoring indicators showed that solutions 2, 3, and 4 all showed a reduction in soil, leaf, and fruit analysis indicators. The Plant Protection and Quarantine Sub-Department proposed expanding the model for these three solutions.

At the same time, it is suggested that institutes, schools, and businesses continue to support the locality or conduct repeated trials of the solutions in various localities of the province, and this should be carried out over a long period to verify the effectiveness of each solution, thereby expanding its application throughout Dong Thap province.
