Ban Viet Lake (Dam Thuy commune, Cao Bang province) becomes a familiar stop for many tourists on their way to Ban Gioc Waterfall in the early days of winter. This is the largest artificial lake in the province, covering about 5 hectares, located about 3 km from Ban Gioc Waterfall and about 70 km from the center of Cao Bang City (formerly), making it very convenient to include in a day trip.

Unlike the crowded Ban Gioc Waterfall or other major tourist destinations in the area, Ban Viet attracts visitors with its tranquil atmosphere, calm lake surface, and coastal forests that change color with the seasons.

The area surrounding the lake is covered with rich vegetation, most notably the fragrant maple trees – a species that locals call "sau" trees.

The fragrant maple tree grows scattered throughout many forests of Cao Bang, but the highest density is concentrated in the area near Ban Viet Lake.

As winter approaches, maple leaves gradually change from yellow to red, creating a striking contrast against the turquoise water. This is also considered by many tourists to be the most beautiful time of year due to the dramatic change in the landscape.

Ms. Le Minh Hanh (from Bac Ninh ) said that her family visited Ban Viet Lake on their way to Ban Gioc Waterfall. “The pictures online looked beautiful, but the colors of the leaves were even more vibrant and clear when we got there. The lake is a good size, the road to it is easy to navigate, and from the edge of the lake you can observe the entire strip of maple trees changing color. In my opinion, if there were more signposts and a few suitable stopping points, this place would attract even more visitors,” Ms. Hanh shared.

In the afternoon, the lake's surface is calm thanks to the gentle breeze, making it ideal for activities such as rafting, boating, or strolling along the waterfront.

Locals say that from mid-December to early January is the period when the lake receives the least rainfall, the water is clear, and the leaves are at their most vibrant.

Mr. Hoang Duc Long (from Thai Nguyen), a frequent trekker in the area, assessed the route around the lake as easily accessible and suitable for those without mountain climbing experience. “The path around the lake is mostly flat dirt, with a few gentle slopes, but nothing too difficult. Camping at night is also very quiet; just bring enough warm clothing because the temperature drops at night. I think if the local authorities added public restrooms, it would be more convenient for visitors,” Mr. Long said.

From Ban Viet Lake, visitors can continue their journey to nearby famous attractions such as Ban Gioc Waterfall, Nguom Ngao Cave, or Co La Waterfall.

Ban Viet Lake is not a noisy or flashy destination, but its tranquility and the beauty of the changing leaves make it a memorable stop for many nature-loving tourists.
