Income of over 450 million VND from growing pineapple

Taking us to visit the pineapple garden, Ms. Binh could not hide her joy when looking at the rows of green pineapples in the fruiting stage. “I have loved eating pineapples since I was a child and always dreamed of having my own pineapple garden. When I had the opportunity, I decided to start making my dream come true,” Ms. Binh shared.

After nearly a year of researching pineapple growing techniques on the internet and learning from relatives, in April 2024, she rented 1 hectare of land in Ia Sik village for 20 million VND/year to grow pineapple.

Ms. Binh planted 55,000 pineapple shoots, each shoot 30-40cm long. On the fertile basalt land, she made beds 25-30cm high, 1.2-1.4m wide, planted 2 rows alternately, 30cm between plants, 60-70cm between rows. After 1 month of planting, Ms. Binh began to fertilize with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and drip water periodically. In the 7th-8th month, she treated the flowers to bloom simultaneously with ethrel or calcium carbide.

Ms. Binh shared: “The technique of processing simultaneous flowering is the most difficult step because if the timing or process is wrong, the pineapple tree will produce fruit unevenly, affecting the quality and making it very difficult to sell. Luckily, I always have my nephew to closely support me in these important steps.”

To optimize labor costs and improve care efficiency, she invested in an automatic drip irrigation system. On average, each watering session lasts about 8 hours and is maintained once a week. In particular, after the flowering treatment stage, she increased the watering frequency to 3 days/time to ensure stable humidity for the pineapple plant to grow and develop fruit evenly.

Thanks to the correct planting and care techniques, each pineapple reaches an average weight of 0.8 to 1.2 kg. From mid-June 2025, Ms. Binh began harvesting and expected to collect about 40 tons of fruit, selling for 14,000 VND/kg.

In addition to income from selling pineapples, Ms. Binh also has additional income from seedlings. It is estimated that after the pineapple crop, she will collect 80,000-90,000 seedlings, each of which is sold for 1,000 VND. "For the whole pineapple crop, I estimate to earn from 640-650 million VND. After deducting the investment cost of about 180 million VND, I still have a profit of more than 450 million VND," Ms. Binh said happily.

Not stopping at the current scale, Ms. Binh is planning to expand the pineapple growing area by 2 hectares next year. “The land here is not flooded, the water source is abundant. If done properly, the pineapple will yield very good yields,” Ms. Binh affirmed.

The model not only brings income to the family but also creates jobs for local people. Ms. Ro Cham Vi (Bang village) confided: “I work here, earning 250,000 VND per day. This source of income helps me take care of family expenses.”

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen The Chien Thang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Nhin Commune, said that Ms. Binh was the first person to bring pineapple trees to grow in the locality and achieved high efficiency. In the coming time, the commune government will create all conditions for people to learn from experience and replicate the pineapple growing model.
