Earning over 450 million VND from pineapple farming.

(GLO) - Ms. Phan Thi Bich Binh, Deputy Principal of Ia Nhin Kindergarten (Chu Pah district, Gia Lai province), is a pioneer in bringing honey pineapple cultivation to the Ia Nhin area, bringing high income and creating jobs for local laborers.

Leading us on a tour of her pineapple garden, Ms. Binh couldn't hide her joy at seeing the lush green rows of pineapples in their fruiting stage. "I've loved eating pineapples since I was a child and always dreamed of having my own pineapple garden. When I had the opportunity, I decided to start making my dream a reality," Ms. Binh shared.

After nearly a year of researching pineapple cultivation techniques online and learning from relatives, in April 2024, she rented 1 hectare of land in Ia Sik village for 20 million VND per year to grow pineapples.

Ms. Binh planted 55,000 pineapple seedlings, each 30-40cm long. On her fertile basalt soil, she created raised beds 25-30cm high and 1.2-1.4m wide, planting two staggered rows, with plants spaced 30cm apart and rows 60-70cm apart. One month after planting, Ms. Binh began fertilizing with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and regularly watering with a drip irrigation system. By the 7th-8th month, she induced simultaneous flowering using ethrel or calcium carbide.

Ms. Binh shared: "The technique of inducing simultaneous flowering is the most difficult step because even a slight deviation in timing or a mistake in the process will cause the pineapple plants to bear fruit unevenly, affecting quality and making them very difficult to sell. Fortunately, I always have my nephew closely supporting me in these crucial stages."

To optimize labor costs and improve care efficiency, she invested in an automatic drip irrigation system. On average, each watering session lasts about 8 hours and is maintained once a week. In particular, after the flowering treatment period, she increased the watering frequency to every 3 days to ensure stable moisture levels for the pineapple plants to grow and develop fruit uniformly.

Thanks to the application of proper planting and care techniques, each pineapple weighs an average of 0.8 to 1.2 kg. From mid-June 2025, Ms. Binh began harvesting and expects to harvest about 40 tons of fruit, selling it at 14,000 VND/kg.

Besides income from selling pineapples, Ms. Binh also earns extra income from pineapple seedlings. She estimates that after the pineapple harvest, she will collect 80,000-90,000 seedlings, each selling for 1,000 VND. “For the entire pineapple season, I estimate I will earn between 640-650 million VND. After deducting investment costs of about 180 million VND, I will still have a profit of over 450 million VND,” Ms. Binh said excitedly.

Not content with the current scale, Ms. Binh is planning to expand her pineapple cultivation area by another 2 hectares next year. "The land here is not prone to flooding, and there is an abundant water source. If done properly, the pineapple plants will yield very good results," Ms. Binh affirmed.

The model not only provides income for families but also creates jobs for local people. Ms. Rơ Châm Vi (Bàng village) shared: “I work here, earning 250,000 VND per day. This income helps me cover my family's expenses.”

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Nguyen The Chien Thang, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Nhin commune, said that Ms. Binh was the first person to bring pineapple plants to the locality and achieved high efficiency. In the future, the commune government will create all conditions for people to learn from her experience and replicate the pineapple cultivation model.
