Mr. Munteanu did not specify the reason for his departure.
The decision came less than a year after he was sworn in as the leader of a pro-Western nation preparing to join the European Union (EU). That tense election was seen as a choice between East and West.
"Today marks the end of my term as prime minister. Having realized that I can no longer fulfill my duties in accordance with my principles and beliefs, I have decided to step down," Munteanu wrote on social media.
He added: "I accept the offer to serve as prime minister with a great sense of responsibility and a strong belief that I can contribute to changing things for the better."
According to Moldovan regulations, when the prime minister announces his resignation, the decision takes effect immediately. However, the government continues to function as an interim government until a new cabinet is formed.
Following Munteanu's resignation announcement, Moldovan President Maia Sandu thanked him for leading the country through a "complex period," but also expressed her hope for "more commitment in difficult decisions and greater openness in listening to the people."
“Next week, I will be working with parliamentary groups in the Knesset to appoint a new prime minister. We need a united and strong government to achieve the country’s goals. We have a responsibility to bring Moldova into the EU and support the country’s development,” said Sandu.
She also acknowledged: “In my experience, at least in recent years, finding a candidate for prime minister has never been easy. I can’t say how long it will take, but we still need to quickly form a new government.”
Moldova is a landlocked country situated between Ukraine to the east and Romania – a member of the EU and NATO – to the west. It was formerly a member of the Soviet Union before declaring independence in 1991.
In recent years, Moldova has pursued a clearly Westernized path, making it a geopolitical battleground between Russia and Europe.
