Promoting scientific research and innovation in schools.

In the context of globalization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the development of science and technology (S&T) and innovation has become an urgent task not only for educational institutions but also for the entire society. In Quang Tri province, over the past years, the Department of Education and Training has strengthened its guidance and organization of S&T research and innovation activities for high school students, achieving many encouraging results.

Continuing its tradition of scientific research, in the 2024-2025 school year, Quang Tri Town High School received good news when the project "Eye-Controlled Wheelchair to Assist People with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in Movement and Communication" by two students, Cao Trung Quan and Le Minh Hieu, won first prize at the National Science and Technology Research Competition in the 2024-2025 school year and was selected to participate in the International Science and Technology Fair 2025 (ISEF 2025) in the United States.

This is also the second time that students from Quang Tri Town High School have had a science and technology project selected to compete internationally. The first important milestone in the school's history of scientific research was the "Robot Arm for People with Disabilities" project, undertaken by Pham Huy. This project not only demonstrated the creativity and effort of the individual but also became a source of pride for the entire school when it won third prize at Intel ISEF 2017, one of the world's largest science and technology competitions held in the United States.

The principal of Quang Tri Town High School, Phan Thien Nga, happily stated: “The school always prioritizes the development of scientific research and innovation. Every year, we develop a detailed plan to guide students on how to write well-structured research papers, helping them master both theoretical and practical knowledge.”

We organize school-level competitions and STEM Day events to provide students with opportunities for practical experience and application of learned knowledge. We also select a team of advisors to review and mentor them before they participate in the provincial-level competition. With this systematic and scientific approach, we hope that more and more students will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to participate in scientific research activities, contributing to improving the quality of education at the school.”

To promote the development and application of science and technology in education, the Department of Education and Training has issued guidelines for implementing scientific research and organizing science and technology competitions for high school students during the school year. Scientific research activities and the organization of science and technology competitions for high school students in the province have achieved many positive results.

High school students have effectively applied their knowledge to solve practical problems, contributing to the innovation of teaching and assessment methods, promoting STEM education in secondary schools, and improving the overall quality of education in schools.

According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training, many science and technology projects by high school students have won high awards at national and international competitions, including two first prizes at the national science and technology competition that were selected to participate in the international competition, and one project that won an international award. Notably, in the 2024-2025 school year, the Quang Tri provincial student delegation won one first prize, one second prize, and one third prize at the National Science and Technology Research Competition for junior and senior high school students.

During the 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025 school years, the Department of Education and Training organized and participated in the "Students and Young Entrepreneurs with Startup Ideas" competition at both the provincial and national levels, winning one first prize and one third prize at the national level.

In addition, the Department of Education and Training also coordinated with the Provincial Radio and Television Station to organize the "Conquering" competition for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 school years. Simultaneously, it collaborated with the Provincial Youth Union to organize the "Quang Tri Province Young Innovators" and "Quang Tri Province Young Informatics" competitions, selecting outstanding products to participate in the National Youth and Children's Innovation Competition.

Training in scientific research methods for administrators and teachers throughout the province has yielded many practical results in applying scientific and technological achievements to management and teaching. The research projects implemented cover various fields such as: planning, organizing school activities, innovating teaching content, student assessment, and applying information technology in educational management.

Every year, the entire education sector has more than 1,300 scientific research projects and initiatives recognized by the sectoral and district-level science councils. Director of the Department of Education and Training, Le Thi Huong, shared: “In recent years, the outstanding achievements of students in scientific research activities, especially in national-level competitions, are not accidental but the result of the culmination of many important factors.”

To achieve these accomplishments, the education sector has done a good job advising the provincial leadership, creating favorable conditions for schools to effectively implement scientific research activities. Every year, the Department of Education and Training provides specific guidance, creating an important legal framework for educational institutions to proactively carry out these activities. The organization of scientific research competitions and contests has been carried out on a large scale and in a systematic manner.

From the scientific organization to the selection and training content for research topics, attention is paid to ensuring that the requirements of provincial and national competitions are met. The scientific research movement throughout the sector has become widespread, contributing to improving the quality of teaching and learning.”

In 2025, the Department of Education and Training will continue to promote the development of scientific and technological research and innovation with specific orientations. One of the top goals is to build an online education and training platform, as well as develop a digital education model to enhance digital literacy in society. A learning management system (LMS) will be implemented to support more effective teaching and learning.

In addition, STEM education will continue to be strongly implemented in general education institutions. The Department will coordinate with the Dariu Foundation to build two Makerspaces in two high schools. Simultaneously, it will research and advise the Provincial People's Committee on issuing a plan for implementing STEM education from 2026 to 2030 to improve the creative educational environment, encourage the development of critical thinking, and the ability to apply knowledge to practice for the younger generation.
