The total pangasius farming area in 2024 is estimated at 5,370 hectares, with the total harvested pangasius output at about 1.67 million tons, equal to 99% compared to the same period in 2023. Pangasius export turnover by October 2024 reached 1.56 billion USD, an increase of 8.9% compared to the same period in 2023.

Pangasius export turnover in 2024 may reach the target of 2 billion USD

Pangasius fish is the main product of the Mekong Delta.

Pangasius is considered a key product of Vietnam in general and of the Mekong Delta in particular. In recent times, people in the Mekong Delta have developed pangasius farming to a new level, with the establishment of farms. Many professional farming areas have applied science and technology.

Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Thien, Vice Chairman of Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee, said that in 2024, the situation of pangasius farming in Dong Thap is relatively stable, the production value of pangasius industry continues to increase, estimated at more than 8,800 billion VND, up 2.86% compared to 2023, accounting for over 17% of the total production value of the province's agriculture, forestry and fishery sector. The area for commercial pangasius farming reaches 2,630 hectares, with an estimated output of 540,000 tons (an increase of 15,000 tons compared to 2023).

Pangasius consumption in Dong Thap is relatively stable, the selling price of commercial pangasius (0.7-0.8 kg/fish) ranges from 26,400-27,600 VND/kg while production costs have decreased (due to reduced feed prices), so farmers have profits. Currently, in Dong Thap province, there are 902 pangasius production and breeding facilities, including 52 breeding facilities and 850 breeding facilities. It is estimated that in 2024, 17 billion pangasius fry and 1.3 billion pangasius fry will be produced.

Ms. To Thi Tuong Lan, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), forecasts that pangasius export turnover in 2024 may reach the target of 2 billion USD. The lack of abundant raw materials may extend to the first quarter of 2025, and the peak season at the end of the year is an opportunity for businesses to improve export prices.

Pangasius is mainly raised in some provinces of the Mekong Delta such as Dong Thap, An Giang , Can Tho, Ben Tre, Vinh Long. By the end of October, the output of fry is estimated at 25.95 billion; fingerlings are estimated at 3.9 billion. It is estimated that in 2024, the output of harvested fry will reach 30 billion; fingerlings will reach 40 billion, contributing effectively to the farming area. There are 1,920 facilities producing and raising pangasius fry nationwide; including 2 facilities producing and raising parent stock, 76 facilities producing fingerlings and 1,842 facilities raising pangasius fry to fingerlings.

Ms. To Thi Tuong Lan said that the opportunity for the development of the pangasius industry is the positive result of anti-dumping tax, reduced inventory in major markets, and no surplus of raw fish like in 2023. Along with that are positive signals from the recovery of the US economy, the opportunity to increase market share in small retail markets in addition to traditional markets, and the potential for pangasius products in the world.

Pangasius fish exports earn 2 billion USD

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Luan, Director of the Department of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in 2024, despite facing many difficulties and challenges, with the continuous efforts of businesses, the support of management agencies and associations, the Vietnamese pangasius industry achieved encouraging results in both quality and value.

Pangasius output in 2024 is estimated at 1.67 million tons, equal to 99% compared to the same period in 2023. As of October 15, 2024, pangasius export turnover reached 1.56 billion USD, an increase of 8.9% over the same period in 2023. However, according to the Department of Fisheries, this growth rate is not uniform, the main reason is fierce competition from other countries and white fish products.

According to the plan of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the target of increasing value in 2025 is to strive to achieve an output of 1.65 million tons, but aim for an export turnover of about 2 billion USD. In the context of many fluctuations in production, economic and environmental life, this is a goal that requires great efforts from the entire industry and many functional agencies.

In addition to the difficulties and challenges for the industry, experts also introduced and provided delegates with information about trends and potentials of the Halal market and requirements for products to achieve Halal certification.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien requested ministries, branches and localities to develop pangasius breeds in an industrial direction, with large-scale production, ensuring biosafety; strictly control the management and use of antibiotics in farming; strictly manage pangasius breed production facilities, ensuring the quality of breed sources; pangasius production and processing must aim for green production, reducing emissions; improve the effectiveness of scientific research in pangasius farming and production.

Along with the formation of a closed chain in production - processing - consumption, it is necessary to increase the application of science and technology, take advantage of by-products to increase product value. In addition to traditional markets, it is necessary to seek and develop new potential markets; including Muslim markets that meet the requirements of Halal certification.
