(PLVN) - A series of activities took place during Earth Hour 2024. The message conveyed by these activities was to make electricity saving a habit. Research by the World Bank shows that if Vietnam practices effective electricity saving, it would be equivalent to building a new power plant with a capacity of 12,000 MW.

Spreading the spirit of saving electricity.

From 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on March 23, 2024, Noi Bai International Airport (NIA) suddenly dimmed its lights. Numerous electric lights in various areas were switched off to support the 2024 Earth Hour event. A representative from NIA stated that the airport had a detailed plan to switch off and reduce the power consumption of unnecessary electrical equipment and public lighting.

Specifically, the plan involves reducing electricity consumption by 50-70% for lighting in certain areas of the passenger terminal, parking lot, and operations control room; cutting and reducing the power of air conditioning systems in Terminals T1 and T2; and turning off 100% of all advertising signs and lighting at the airport's offices. Notably, the airport representative affirmed that participating in the energy saving campaign at Noi Bai International Airport will not affect any flight operations at the airport.

This is just one of thousands of activities in response to the Earth Hour event taking place globally from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM (local time) on Saturday, March 23rd. In Vietnam, all 63 provinces and cities simultaneously carried out activities to celebrate the event with the message "Making electricity saving a habit." This message was sent to the community with a call to practice electricity saving, energy conservation, and environmental protection.

According to national electricity consumption data, the National Power System Dispatch Center reported that after one hour of switching off lights in response to the 2024 Electricity Saving Campaign, the whole country saved 428,000 kWh of electricity (equivalent to approximately 858.9 million VND).

According to Vo Quang Lam, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), the message "Making electricity saving a habit" of the 2024 National Electricity Festival reflects the desire that "the habit of saving electricity will not only be practiced during the one hour of the event but maintained 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We hope that the 2024 National Electricity Festival will continue to spread the spirit of using energy efficiently and effectively among all people, businesses, and socio- economic organizations."

"Energy saving will become a habit for every Vietnamese citizen to contribute their small part to building a greener society, moving towards a low-carbon economy and contributing to the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050 that the Vietnamese Government committed to at COP26."

According to a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation, in March 2024, the Corporation's Youth Union implemented activities to support and respond to the Energy Saving Campaign, such as establishing teams of energy saving communicators in 21 districts and Thu Duc City.

In addition, we will implement programs to promote energy saving and efficiency in Ho Chi Minh City. And not only during the National Energy Saving Day, from March 24, 2024, the Youth Union of the Corporation will continue to cooperate with the Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union to organize an exhibition booth in support of energy saving at the City Youth Festival.

Save electricity to optimize costs.

The Prime Minister's Directive on Electricity Saving, issued in 2023, set very clear electricity saving targets, such as striving to save at least 2% of total electricity consumption annually during the period 2023-2025 and subsequent years; and aiming for 100% of street lighting to use LED lights by the end of 2025. From there, large electricity consumers such as industrial production and public lighting have also been given specific electricity saving targets.

"As one of the nation's key energy-consuming facilities, in order to use energy efficiently and effectively, Noi Bai International Airport has implemented a detailed plan, proposing technological and technical solutions in management and operation such as using LED lighting; applying automation and information technology to optimally manage the power consumption of equipment," a representative of Noi Bai Airport shared.

The actual results from 2023 show that, with small actions such as adjusting the number of recessed ceiling lights switched on during the day in the lobbies of floors 3 and 4 of Terminal 1 to suit actual lighting conditions; replacing fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps with LED lights in Terminal 1; replacing two split air conditioning units on floor 2 of Terminal 1, and many other activities, Noi Bai International Airport saved 357,205 kWh/year, equivalent to saving over 700 million VND/year in electricity costs compared to the old operating plan and the use of previous equipment.

To achieve its energy saving and efficiency goals for 2024, Noi Bai International Airport continues to implement solutions such as replacing fluorescent and compact fluorescent lamps with LED lights in Terminal 1 and Hall E - T1; replacing 4 individual air conditioning units in the public area on the second floor of Terminal 1... It is estimated that the energy savings in 2024 will be approximately over 637,000 kWh/year, saving an equivalent of about 1.4 billion VND/year compared to using the old equipment.
