Electricity consumption sets new record.

VnExpressVnExpress30/04/2024

Due to the heatwave, electricity consumption last week set many new records, with daily consumption nearly reaching 1 billion kWh.

The Electricity Regulatory Authority ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ) reported that last week, average daily electricity consumption reached nearly 947 million kWh, approximately 65.4 million kWh higher than the previous week. In the North alone, consumption increased by more than 31.7 million kWh per day. This is due to the impact of the ongoing heatwave across all three regions, especially in the North.

During the week, many new records were set. At 1:30 PM on April 27th, the highest national power demand reached 47,670 MW, while electricity consumption on April 26th reached 994 million kWh.

Compared to the same period last year, the national power system's maximum capacity increased by 20.2%, with the North alone seeing a 19.9% increase. Meanwhile, electricity production on April 26th increased by 23.1%, with the North alone experiencing a 35.5% increase.

From the beginning of the year until now, nationwide electricity consumption has grown by approximately 11.2% compared to the same period in 2023, with the North increasing by 11.3%, the Central region by 8.5%, and the South by 11.7%.

Nevertheless, electricity supply remained secure last week, according to the Electricity Regulatory Authority. During the week, the agency managed hydropower reservoirs efficiently to maintain maximum water levels, ensuring both irrigation and power generation, especially during peak heat waves. Average daily output for the week was approximately 175 million kWh.

The regulatory agency also increased the mobilization of coal-fired power plants, with a daily output of 557 million kWh, 36 million kWh higher than the April plan. Currently, all available coal-fired power plants in the system are being mobilized. During the week, no plants ceased operation due to coal shortages, but there were still incidents and power reductions causing a shortfall of nearly 500 million kWh.

Gas-fired thermal power plants are currently generating an average of approximately 91 million kWh per day, 13 million kWh higher than the April plan. Renewable energy sources (excluding hydropower) are generating about 106 million kWh per day.

Throughout the week, electricity continued to be transmitted from central to northern and southern Vietnam via the 500kV power grid.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, over the next 10 days, the heatwave may subside in the evenings, with rain and thunderstorms occurring in many areas. Consequently, peak power demand and electricity consumption may decrease, but close monitoring is still necessary to ensure supply across all three regions.

In addition to the sources already mobilized, the regulatory agency is considering using oil-fired power plants when necessary. They also stated that they will provide maximum support for the testing of new power plants.
