The Ministry of Information and Communications is in the process of examining TikTok and says there are grounds for violations of the platform.
At the press conference on the afternoon of June 5, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam said TikTok “There are a lot of violations.” The inspection team's preliminary findings "help confirm that the initial assumptions about the platform's violations, and the legal violations that took place on TikTok, are well-founded."
Mr. Lam said the inspection is still underway, expected to end in June, so the specific results cannot be announced.
The plan to check TikTok Vietnam took place from mid-May with the participation of the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Public Security, and the General Department of Taxation.
There are eight main issues of TikTok being considered related to compliance with regulations on providing social networking services to domestic users, information censorship process, user authentication, prevention and removal of illegal information, and handling of complaints.
TikTok will also be checked on the distribution algorithm, recommending content to users; the collection, management, storage and use of data ensures information safety and network security; how to manage "idols", ie celebrities, operating in the field of performing arts on the platform.
At the press conference, the Deputy Minister of Information and Communications affirmed that "if the inspection detects violations, the platform's violations and those of the individuals involved will be handled." The ministry also called for the provision of information and law dissemination to the content creation community in Vietnam.
Launched in the domestic market in April 4, TikTok has 2019 million users in Vietnam, with featured content being short videos. Recently, the additional platform TikTok Shop and quickly became one of the most used e-commerce services.
At the meeting in early April, the Ministry of Information and Communications said that TikTok has six violations in Viet Nam. The platform has no measures to control infringing content related to politics, anti-Party and State; hearsay; content that is bullshit, malicious, dangerous to children, content that violates copyright, allows users to arbitrarily use other people's images to smear. The activities of "idols" are not well managed, leading to many people tending to create content that lacks culture, targeting viewers' curiosity, and even creating "trends" to make profits.
In addition, the platform uses an automatic distribution algorithm to create trends, leading to the distribution of content that is viewed, despite objections, adversely affecting the community and young people. TikTok also does not have effective measures to prevent commercial activities, business, trading, advertising fake goods, imitation goods.
