In the second leg of the final, Thailand lost 2-3 to Vietnam, thus accepting second place in the 2024 AFF Cup with an aggregate score of 3-5 after two legs. Notably, this was the first time in 16 years that Thailand had lost to Vietnam on home soil. Furthermore, this was the first time in AFF Cup history that Vietnam had managed to defeat Thailand in both legs of the final.

When the second leg of the final concluded, the Thai national team received much criticism from fans for losing at home. Weerathep Pomphan, who received a red card in the 74th minute, was the most heavily criticized player on social media. Before Pomphan left the field, Thailand was leading 2-1 in the second leg. However, from the moment he was sent off, the "War Elephants" lost their previous pressure and even conceded two more goals to Vietnam.

Regarding the criticism directed at Weerathep Pomphan, Sarayut Chaikhamdee commented: “Peeradon Chamrasamee almost completely dominated the midfield. However, to achieve that, Weerathep Pomphan had to shoulder the responsibility of recovering the ball and engaging in tackles. Anyone who knows football wouldn't blame these two players. As for the second yellow card Weerathep Pomphan received and his dismissal, use your judgment to decide how to handle it. Watch football intelligently; don't just use your emotions in your commentary to criticize.”

Besides Weerathep Pomphan, defender Pansa Hemviboon also became a target of Thai fans. In the first leg of the final, Pansa Hemviboon wore the captain's armband, played alongside Chalermsak Aukkee, and made many mistakes, helping Xuan Son score a brace. However, in the second leg, Pansa Hemviboon was given another opportunity and played alongside Jonathan Khemdee. In the 82nd minute of the match, Pansa Hemviboon scored an own goal, helping the Vietnamese team equalize 2-2.

“Regarding Pansa Hemviboon, I think everything he did was fine, except for the own goal. However, I will give you an overview of the situation. At that time, right-back Suphanan Burirat had left his position and Pansa Hemviboon was in a passive position. Please go back to the match and look carefully. Don't just comment, attack, and claim it was Pansa Hemviboon's fault,” Sarayut Chaikhamdee added.

In contrast to the angry reaction of the fans, many veteran Thai players such as Chanathip Songkrasin, Dangda, and Theerathon Bunmathan sent words of encouragement to their younger teammates. Chanathip Songkrasin shared on his personal page: "Keep fighting, Thailand national team."

Madam Pang thanked Thai fans for always supporting the Thai national team.

Meanwhile, Madam Pang also appeared before the media and shared her thoughts after the 2024 AFF Cup final. The president of the FAT expressed: “We sincerely thank the clubs, players, coaches, and all staff for trying their best at the 2024 AFF Cup. From the bottom of my heart, I accept all the comments after this tournament. I must apologize to the Thai fans for supporting the team today, but we were unable to win the AFF Cup. We lost our advantage since the first leg of the final in Vietnam. Thailand lost 1-2 and today we also conceded an early goal.”

However, I believe this defeat is also a lesson for FAT. I am the president, and I understand that in any tournament, fans want the Thai national team to win. I am saddened by the loss in the final, but at the same time, I am happy that Thai fans always show great affection for the team; nearly 47,000 fans came to the stadium today.
