A staunch communist soldier

Comrade Nguyen Van Linh, whose real name was Nguyen Van Cuc, also known by the pseudonym Muoi Cuc, was born on July 1, 1915, into a poor, patriotic civil servant family in Yen Phu village, Giai Pham commune, My Van district (formerly), Hung Yen province – a region rich in patriotic traditions and cultural heritage, the birthplace of many heroes and cultural figures. Born into a country suffering from hardship, understanding the life of slavery, enlightened by the revolution, and guided by the ideology of Nguyen Ai Quoc, Comrade Nguyen Van Linh joined the revolution at the young age of 14...

Entering the resistance war against the US, Comrade Nguyen Van Linh was trusted by the Central Committee and transferred from Viet Bac back to the people of Southern Vietnam to participate in leading the revolution in the South, facing a new struggle and extremely difficult and complex tasks (serving as Secretary of the Saigon-Chợ Lớn Regional Party Committee; Secretary of the Regional Party Committee; Secretary of the Saigon-Gia Dinh Regional Party Committee; Secretary of the Saigon-Gia Dinh City Party Committee; Secretary of the Central Bureau of the South...). Throughout the fierce and arduous resistance war, under the leadership and guidance of Comrade Nguyen Van Linh, the struggle movements took place vigorously and widely, attracting a large number of people from all walks of life – farmers, workers, intellectuals, students, small traders, artists, etc. – to participate in the struggle and creating a vibrant and widespread movement. As a staunch defender of the South during the arduous period of the resistance war against the American imperialist invasion, Comrade Nguyen Van Linh demonstrated leadership and organizational skills, correctly and creatively implementing the Party's policies and guidelines, contributing to the great victory of the resistance war against the US, saving the country, liberating the South, and unifying the nation (April 30, 1975).

A steadfast and innovative leader of the Vietnamese revolution.

In December 1986, at the Sixth National Congress of the Party, the congress that marked the beginning of the reform period, Comrade Nguyen Van Linh was elected General Secretary. In this capacity, together with the Politburo and the Central Committee, he steadfastly, proactively, and creatively led the revolutionary cause, overcoming all difficulties and challenges from within the country and the world; steadfastly adhering to the socialist-oriented reform line, cautiously choosing steps and methods to suit Vietnam's conditions; focusing on economic reform; gradually reforming the organization and working methods of the political system; resolutely rejecting pluralism and a multi-party system; and valuing the promotion of socialist democracy. Comrade Nguyen Van Linh's articles, "Things to Do Immediately," signed NVL and published in the Nhan Dan newspaper in the early years of the Doi Moi (Renovation) period, created a democratic, open, and transparent atmosphere, encouraging frank and truthful speech, with words matching actions, contributing to the fight against corruption and the purification of Party and State agencies.

During the term of the 6th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Comrade Nguyen Van Linh served as the head of the drafting committee for the platform presented to the 7th National Congress of the Party; he directed the amendment of the 1980 Constitution and the adoption of the 1992 Constitution to suit the country's period of reform. The Platform for Building the Country during the Transition Period to Socialism (the 1991 Platform) was born in the context of complex international developments and the collapse of socialism in Eastern Europe, but it demonstrated the firm and unwavering resolve of our Party and people. The Platform affirmed Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought as the ideological foundation and guiding principles for the Party's actions.
