Toni Kroos was right about Barcelona.

Toni Kroos' warning from January about Barcelona's playing style is gradually becoming a reality after their recent defeat in the 2025/26 Champions League quarter-finals.

Toni Kroos's statement has suddenly been brought up again after Barcelona's defeat.

Toni Kroos isn't the type of player who likes controversy, but once he speaks, he usually gets straight to the point. And this time, the former Real Madrid midfielder's assessment of Barcelona is being recalled as an accurate prophecy.

Hansi Flick's Barcelona still have a lot of work to do if they want to return to the top of European football.

In January, after Barcelona defeated Real Madrid to win the Spanish Super Cup, Kroos offered his perspective on his personal podcast. He wasn't caught up in the superficial aspects of the achievement, but instead pointed out the core weaknesses in the Catalan team's playing style.

“Barcelona won’t win the Champions League if they don’t change their playing style. When you’re tired and you stick to the same way, gaps will appear. Any team can exploit them and eliminate them,” Kroos said.

That scenario is actually unfolding. Barcelona entered the Champions League with an energetic attacking style, but exposed many gaps in their defensive system. Against top-class opponents, these small details quickly become fatal flaws.

This isn't the first time Kroos has issued a warning. Even last season, he criticized the team's defensive approach under coach Hansi Flick. Kroos's point is clear: a team aiming to win the Champions League cannot simply play based on inspiration; they need balance and control.

Barcelona haven't reached the Champions League final in recent seasons, and that makes Kroos's warning even harder to argue against.

In this story, Kroos not only predicted but also accurately pointed out Barcelona's systemic weakness. Barcelona may win the Spanish Super Cup, they may win La Liga, but if they continue to play like this, it will be difficult for them to return to the pinnacle of European glory.

This is truly the number one contender for the Champions League title. Their 2-1 victory against Liverpool on the morning of April 15th in the second leg of the 2025/26 Champions League quarter-finals was a clear statement of PSG's ambition to defend their title.
