Tottenham would be in crisis if they were relegated. |
According to a warning from football finance expert Rob Wilson, relegation could cost the London club between £200 and £250 million, leading to a series of extremely serious consequences.
Revenue from television rights, commercials, and matchday income will plummet if Tottenham are relegated to the Championship. While the "parachute payments" scheme could provide around £45 million in the first year, this figure will only partially mitigate the financial shock.
To survive, Tottenham must drastically restructure its wage bill. Current contracts often include clauses for pay cuts upon relegation, but a 50% reduction is insufficient. According to Wilson, the club needs to reduce its wage bill by as much as 75% to adapt to the harsh realities of the Championship, where revenue is significantly lower than in the Premier League.
This risk is entirely plausible, as Tottenham currently sit 18th with 30 points after 32 rounds, two points behind West Ham in a safe position. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United have 33 and 36 points respectively, putting significant pressure on Spurs in the final stages of the season.
If they fail to avoid relegation, a wave of player departures is inevitable. Key players like Cristian Romero, Kolo Muani, and Archie Gray could become targets for major European clubs.
In this context, Tottenham must secure maximum points in the remaining six rounds. Matches against Brighton, Wolves, Aston Villa, Chelsea, along with two direct confrontations with Leeds and Everton, will decide Spurs' fate.
Just one misstep, and the London team could pay the price with a full-blown crisis.
