On July 30, the Vietnam National Petroleum Group ( Petrolimex ) officially started a pilot sale of E10 gasoline at some stores in its distribution system in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly). This pilot sale was implemented 2 days earlier than originally planned.
At the Petrolimex gas station at the corner of Hai Ba Trung - Tran Cao Van (Da Kao ward), some customers came to fill up with E10 gasoline.
The Petrolimex store at the corner of Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Pasteur streets also sells this biofuel. Other stores on Ly Thuong Kiet and Vo Thi Sau streets are also crowded with customers looking for information.
Staff at gas stations provide thorough advice and ask for customers' opinions before selling. Some stores also install boards with information about E10 gasoline, combined with loudspeakers to promote the environmental protection effectiveness of this type of gasoline.
The price of E10 gasoline on July 30 is 19,490 VND/liter, about 540 VND/liter lower than RON95 gasoline.
Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, a technology car driver living in Xuan Hoa ward (HCMC), said that he used to regularly fill up with E5 gasoline and now he is concerned about fuel efficiency, engine durability, etc. when using E10 gasoline.
“I just tried this type of gasoline because I found it competitively priced and good for the environment,” said Mr. Hung.
According to Mr. Tran Ngoc Nam, Deputy General Director of Petrolimex, the pilot E10 gasoline business aims to evaluate market response, consumer behavior and the technical response level of the distribution system.
“The E10 gasoline business requires serious preparation of infrastructure, technology, specialized tanks for fuel alcohol and close coordination from oil refineries. Therefore, Petrolimex proposes that the Ministry of Industry and Trade soon issue instructions on the implementation progress, so that key traders can proactively invest and convert technical systems, and at the same time propose to adjust some technical standards of current Vietnamese standards to suit the mineral gasoline sources on the international market and similar to the technical standard requirements in the region,” Mr. Tran Ngoc Nam added.
During the pilot phase, the Ministry of Industry and Trade assigned the Vietnam Oil Corporation (PVOIL) to sell E10 gasoline at its retail gasoline stores in Hanoi and Hai Phong from August 1.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade informed that the pilot E10 gasoline is a preparation step to gradually replace traditional gasoline with biofuel nationwide.
Mr. Cao Hoai Duong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Oil Corporation (PVOIL) informed that to ensure the source of ethanol for blending E10 bio-fuel, PVOIL will buy from a number of domestic ethanol factories and import from abroad; coordinate with a number of partners to install electric vehicle charging stations including electric cars and electric motorbikes at gas stations in the system.
Currently, PVOIL has also developed more than 400 electric car charging stations nationwide and these stations can be used to charge electric motorbikes.
In addition, PVOIL is working with a number of partners on the possibility of installing electric motorbike battery swapping cabinets at gas stations in PVOIL's system for customers.
