As one of the pioneering households to cultivate the golden camellia tree, Mr. Nguyen Van Tang from Khe Dam village said: "In 2016, I went to the forest to dig up the roots and planted them in my garden. During the planting process, I researched how to propagate them and expanded the planting area year by year. To date, my family has more than 4,000 golden camellia trees, of which over 1,000 are already producing fruit. On average, my family harvests over 400 kg of fresh camellia flowers each year, bringing in an income of 40 million VND."
Similar to Mr. Tang's family, many households in Thai Binh commune have also started growing this plant. According to statistics, Thai Binh commune currently has over 20 hectares of golden camellia tea with about 200 households growing it, mainly concentrated in some villages such as Khe Dam, Khe Ca, Khe Da 1, Khe Da 2...
According to local farmers, the golden camellia plant is very suitable for planting on hilly and forested land. It's easy to grow and care for; however, to ensure healthy growth and abundant flowering, growers need proper care techniques. With good care, after about 3 to 4 years of planting, the plant begins to yield a harvest. The harvesting period is from October to March (lunar calendar), with prices ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 VND/kg for fresh camellia flowers; and 2,000,000 to 3,000,000 VND/kg for dried camellia flowers. On average, one plant can yield 2 to 3 kg of fresh flowers per harvest (larger plants yield 6 to 10 kg).
Not only focusing on breeding and cultivating golden flower tea, some households in the commune have also proactively invested in deep processing and developing products from this plant. Ms. Le Thi Ha, from Binh Nguyen village, said: "My family started planting golden flower tea in 2023, with about 1,500 trees. Aiming for sustainable development and enhancing the value of golden flower tea, my family has researched and processed various products from the flowers and leaves of the tea plant. Accordingly, to proactively secure raw materials and ensure stable production, my family has partnered with 5 households in the area to purchase golden flower tea, covering a total area of about 4 hectares; and simultaneously invested over 500 million VND to build a factory and purchase equipment such as industrial dryers, grinders, and tea bag packaging machines... Currently, my family has launched 3 products on the market: TRAVAHA tea bags, TRAVAHA golden flower tea, and TRAVAHA freeze-dried golden flower tea leaves." In 2025 alone, the family sold over 500 products, generating revenue of approximately 100 million VND. Notably, in December 2025, three of the family's products were evaluated and ranked as OCOP 3-star. This serves as a foundation for us to continue expanding production scale, improving quality, and boosting product sales in the future.
Mr. Dang Dinh Duc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Thai Binh commune, said: "The natural conditions of the commune are very suitable for developing the golden flower tea plant. In the coming time, the People's Committee of the commune will continue to propagate and encourage people to maintain and expand the planting area; at the same time, coordinate with specialized agencies to organize training and transfer techniques for propagating, planting and caring for the golden flower tea plant to the people. In addition, the People's Committee of the commune will continue to pay attention to and encourage households to research and develop more processed products from the golden flower tea plant to enhance the value of the product such as: golden flower tea wine, shower gel, and skin cream made from golden flower tea; creating favorable conditions for households to promote and sell. Through that, we will gradually build and affirm the brand of the local golden flower tea in the market."
The model of cultivating and processing golden flower tea plants in Thai Binh commune not only brings economic benefits and contributes to increasing people's income, but also opens up a direction for sustainable agricultural economic development, linked to the conservation and promotion of the value of precious medicinal plants of the locality.
