The arrival of the dry season, marked by strong winds, is also the time when the first wild sunflowers of the season bloom and release their fragrance. Wild sunflowers have many other names such as: Chrysanthemum sunflower, mountain sunflower, Mexican sunflower, Nitobe sunflower….
This is a wild flowering plant originating from Mexico, first introduced to Da Lat by the French, and subsequently widely cultivated in plantations in Lam Dong province as well as other provinces in the Central Highlands.
Even though we've traveled to the Central Highlands dozens of times to admire the wild sunflowers, my friends and I never get tired of them. Not far from Bao Loc City, entering Di Linh District, we start to see many bushes and clusters of wild sunflowers along the roadside, their bright yellow color illuminating a vast expanse of sky.
Upon reaching Duc Trong district, the wild sunflowers became even denser. The scenery along the roadside resembled a vibrant, colorful painting. On Provincial Road 725, starting in Da Lat City and connecting with Provincial Road 721 in Da Teh town, Da Teh district, Lam Dong province, we conquered incredibly spectacular mountain passes such as Ta Nung Pass and Con O Pass… and immersed ourselves in the vast expanse of coffee plantations laden with ripe fruit and the bright yellow wild sunflowers lining both sides of the road.
In the vast Tây Nguyên (Central Highlands) region, wild sunflowers can be found in many areas, like this road, where almost every section is covered in a sea of yellow. Perhaps for the local people, the blooming of wild sunflowers is a normal sight.
But for tourists from afar, seeing the wildflowers of the mountains and forests in full bloom is an incredibly enjoyable experience. Countless photos are taken with the wild sunflowers, "marking" the identity of the land they have visited...
Recently, the Wild Sunflower Week - Chu Dang Ya Volcano was held in Gia Lai province, attracting thousands of visitors. This event aimed to promote the image and introduce the tourism potential, culture, and hospitable people of Gia Lai. The image of wild sunflowers associated with Chu Dang Ya volcano - one of the 10 most beautiful volcanic craters in the world as selected by a British magazine - has become a tourism brand for Gia Lai.
