Do babies need to drink water?

Ms. Nguyen Thi My Loan, Deputy Head of the Department of Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Nutrition, Can Tho Center for Disease Control, said: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months of life. Exclusive breastfeeding means only breastfeeding, without any additional food or liquids, not even water; except when the child needs medication, oral rehydration solution, drops, syrups, vitamins, or minerals as prescribed by a doctor.

Many mothers have a habit of giving their babies extra water while breastfeeding or after feedings to quench their thirst or to rinse their mouths. While this might seem reasonable at first, it's actually not good for babies under 6 months old. Giving water to babies under 6 months old can be risky if the water source is unsanitary, leading to infections and diarrhea. Furthermore, newborns have small stomachs, and giving them extra water can make them feel full, causing them to breastfeed less, eventually stopping breastfeeding altogether. This can lead to poor nutrient absorption and malnutrition. Giving babies extra water after each feeding can also easily cause them to vomit or choke. On the other hand, if mothers give their babies water instead of breastfeeding, it can also gradually reduce their milk supply in the future.

To ensure oral hygiene for your baby, you can use sterile gauze, wrapped around your finger, moistened with physiological saline solution (0.9% Sodium Chloride), and gently wipe the baby's tongue, the inside of the cheeks, the palate, gums, and lips. Do this at least once a day or whenever the baby's tongue seems dirty to prevent oral thrush (it's best to do this before feeding to avoid vomiting). When the baby is 6 months old and starts eating solid foods, you can provide a small amount of cooled boiled water, but this should not replace breast milk. Breastfeeding should continue until 24 months for the baby's overall development.
