The first VNU DEC 2023 Dental Scientific Conference and Exhibition, themed "Connecting Dentistry," is being organized by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, from December 14-16 in Hanoi. At the conference, Professor Trinh Dinh Hai, Head of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, stated that according to the latest nationwide oral health survey results, over 80% of people in Vietnam suffer from oral diseases, either cavities, gingivitis, periodontitis, or both.
VNU DEC 2023 updates new techniques in dentistry, improving the quality of training and treatment in the specialty.
Oral diseases are a major cause of premature tooth loss, significantly impacting overall health. Furthermore, potential infections in the oral cavity can lead to systemic diseases such as glomerulonephritis, arthritis, and endocarditis.
Therefore, updating knowledge, skills, and modern, advanced tools for the care, treatment, and prevention of oral diseases is extremely important and urgent for training institutions, clinics, and the dental community.
VNU DEC 2023 was a major dental event attracting over 2,000 delegates and 45 leading speakers from 9 countries, discussing specialized fields such as: dental implants, bone grafting and soft tissue reconstruction in periodontology, implants, orthodontics, oral surgery, dental prosthetics, and digital dentistry.
On this occasion, experts discussed and updated new directions in training and scientific research in the field of dentistry.
VNU DEC 2023 is a place to update on advanced and modern dental treatment methods, connect dental training institutions with the healthcare network, improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, enhance the quality of training, and meet the increasing demand for healthcare and health protection for the people.

According to Professor Hai, gingivitis and periodontitis are quite common oral diseases in the community. Initially, inflammation of the gums, if left untreated, will cause bone loss around the teeth, forming pockets. A person has 32 teeth, and with them come 32 pockets of infection containing pus – very dangerous sources of infection that can lead to tooth and gum loss, and are the origin of internal diseases such as glomerulonephritis, arthritis, and endocarditis.
Therefore, preventive treatment of oral diseases is very important. First, it is necessary to prevent tooth decay, and second, to prevent gingivitis and periodontitis.
Professor Hai further noted: "According to surveys, over 80% of teenagers have misaligned teeth. If they want beautiful teeth, they need orthodontic treatment. Therefore, we must also pay attention to preventing misalignment so that children can have more beautiful teeth."
Professor Hai assessed that the dental industry in Vietnam, like in other developing countries, is developing very rapidly. Dental and maxillofacial clinics in the country are very quick to adopt new methods and techniques.
At the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, faculty members who are doctors regularly travel abroad each year for study, exchange, and updating their expertise with leading specialists. This conference also demonstrates the adoption and application of new techniques in the field of dentistry.
