AP reported that North Korea said on January 5 that leader Kim Jong Un had personally supervised the country's hypersonic missile test launches on January 4, while emphasizing the need to strengthen the country's nuclear deterrence capabilities.
North Korea announced the test launch a day after its neighbor said it had detected ballistic missile launches and accused North Korea of provocation. The tests took place just hours before South Korean President Lee Jae-myung was due to depart for a visit to China.

According to the North Korean state news agency KCNA, leader Kim Jong Un said: "Through the missile test launch on January 4, we can confirm that a very important technological task for the defense sector has been completed. We must continuously upgrade military equipment, especially offensive weapon systems."
According to AP, possessing effective hypersonic weapons would allow North Korea to penetrate the missile defense systems of the United States and South Korea.
In recent weeks, North Korea has tested what it describes as new long-range strategic cruise missiles and anti-aircraft missiles, and released photos showing significant progress in the construction of its first nuclear submarine.
North Korea's latest missile tests come after the US launched an attack on Venezuela and arrested President Nicolas Maduro on January 3.
Many experts believe that the US military campaign in Venezuela could prompt North Korea to further expand its nuclear weapons capabilities, as leader Kim Jong Un believes this will ensure the survival of his government and national sovereignty against hostile actions.
