Appearing in court on April 23 as a witness in the lawsuit between the US Department of Justice and Google, Weiberg stated that Chrome would be worth approximately $50 billion if Google were forced to sell the browser.

The U.S. Department of Justice is proposing that the court compel Google to sell its Chrome browser.

The court is considering remedies after determining Google has a monopoly in the search market. One measure being proposed by the Department of Justice is the sale of Chrome.

When calculating Chrome's value, DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weiberg stated that he focused on the browser's user base. The valuation is higher than the approximately $20 billion figure Bloomberg reported in November 2024. Furthermore, with such an exorbitant valuation, the number of people who can afford Chrome will likely shrink.

Previously, at a court hearing on April 22nd, OpenAI's Chief Product Officer Nick Turley stated that his company and "many others" would like to acquire Chrome if given the opportunity. ChatGPT currently has an extension for this browser, but if Chrome were more deeply integrated into OpenAI, the chatbot would be much better.

He also revealed that last summer he had contacted Google about a deal to improve the accuracy and timeliness of ChatGPT responses, but was rejected.

The antitrust trial will last three weeks, beginning on April 21st, and will be presided over by Judge Amit Mehta. This is the same judge who ruled that Google had an illegal monopoly in the search market through practices such as paying Apple to be the default search engine on iPhones.
