As one of the world's leading countries in information technology, India has been implementing numerous policies to promote digitalization across all sectors, including the Digital India Initiative. This program, launched by the Indian government in 2015, aims to spread technological advancements to enhance citizen participation in India's economic development.
The government has just announced four main pillars to further promote the Digital India Initiative: Lower equipment prices; Ensuring nationwide digital connectivity; Ensuring data access for all; and Establishing a national goal of "digital first".
According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the price of mobile devices is becoming increasingly cheaper thanks to manufacturing in India. From just two companies producing mobile devices in 2014, that number has now risen to 200. Meanwhile, the rapid deployment of infrastructure has helped 5G networks reach many areas. Low mobile data fees have attracted more and more people to use the service. Statistics show that Indians use an average of 30GB of data per month.
The Indian Prime Minister also cited a series of successful initiatives, such as the People's Prosperity Assurance Programme (Jan Dhan), the Biometric Personal Identification System in India (Aadhaar), the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), and the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), which lay the foundation for the country's national digital development goals. These pillars aim to ensure that no region or community is left behind in the digital age.
Experts believe that over the past 10 years, the adoption of digital technology in India has been very successful, with government agencies developing systems, setting rules, and then encouraging private sector participation. In the future, India's digital transformation will continue to be driven by technological advancements and increasing internet penetration.
