(CLO) Amidst the strong penetration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the information and communication sector, online platforms are rushing to establish fundamental rules for the use of this technology.

This week, Wikipedia officially banned editors from using AI-generated text; however, the open encyclopedia has not yet completely prohibited the presence of AI in the entire editorial process.

In a significant policy change recently updated, Wikipedia now states that “the use of large language models to create or rewrite article content is prohibited.” This new rule clarifies previous guidelines that were considered too vague, stating only that large language models “should not be used to create Wikipedia articles from scratch.”

The application of AI to articles has become a hotly debated topic within the platform's large community of volunteer editors. The new policy was reportedly put to a vote and received overwhelming support from editors, with 40 votes in favor and only 2 against. This move reflects the community's efforts to protect the originality of the content.

Despite imposing specific bans on content creation, Wikipedia still leaves open the possibility of using AI in certain auxiliary processes. The new policy states: “Editors are permitted to use large language models to suggest basic draft edits to their own articles and incorporate some of those suggestions after human review, provided the large language model does not add new content on its own.”

However, content moderation experts here also emphasized a warning message to the community that "caution is needed because large language models can go beyond what you require and change the meaning of the text, making it unsupported by cited sources."

This change reflects Wikipedia's cautious approach to the explosion of AI tools in the US and around the world .
