EU tightens policy on deporting migrants.

On June 1st, the EU Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on new regulations aimed at accelerating the deportation of migrants without legal residency rights, which includes allowing the establishment of "repatriation centers" outside EU territory.

The European Union (EU) has reached a preliminary agreement on new regulations aimed at expediting the repatriation of migrants who do not qualify for residency, paving the way for stricter migration controls amid continuing immigration pressure in Europe.

This regulation aims to expedite the process of removing those without legal residency rights from EU territory, while also strengthening coordination among member states.

One of the notable provisions is the provision allowing member states to establish “repatriation centers” in third countries to receive migrants who do not qualify to remain in the EU while awaiting the completion of repatriation procedures. Under the new regulations, unaccompanied minors will not be eligible for this mechanism.

The agreement also imposes stricter obligations on those receiving decisions to leave the EU, requiring them to cooperate with authorities in verifying their identity and completing repatriation procedures. The EU is also aiming to establish a mechanism for mutual recognition of repatriation decisions between member states to reduce roundabout movement within the bloc.

According to European Commission data, less than 30% of those ordered to leave the EU are actually repatriated to their country of origin. This is considered one of the reasons why the EU is pushing for a more aggressive approach to managing illegal migration.

This new development comes as the EU accelerates the implementation of the Treaty on Migration and Refugees – a comprehensive reform framework that was previously adopted and is set to come into force in June 2026. The new regulations are expected to help the bloc more effectively manage the long-standing migration pressures, but they also spark debate regarding human rights and the responsibility of receiving countries.
