Economic sector

Today, June 3rd, the Government Newspaper published the following information: Socio-economic development continues to achieve many positive results.

At the regular Government meeting in May 2026, held on June 3rd, Minister of Finance Ngo Van Tuan stated that Vietnam's socio-economic situation continued to achieve many positive results with several bright spots in the first five months of the year. Specifically, the industrial production index increased by over 9% (the highest since 2021), total retail sales of goods and services increased by over 11%, and the number of international visitors reached nearly 11 million. Regarding investment and trade, registered FDI capital reached over US$24 billion (a 33.4% increase) and total import and export turnover reached a record high of US$445.12 billion. Against the backdrop of many complex global developments, the Government is determined to steadfastly strive for double-digit growth, while focusing on controlling inflation, promoting public investment disbursement, ensuring social security, and removing obstacles for businesses to create momentum for breakthroughs in the coming period.

According to VNA (Vietnam News Agency): Vietnam's economy from an international perspective: A bright spot of ASEAN's resilient growth.

From the perspective of international organizations, Vietnam's economy is asserting its position as a bright spot of resilient growth and a strategic location in the global supply chain. Following an impressive 8% growth target in 2025, Vietnam has been ranked among the "Fabulous Five" by IQI Global – five countries with the potential to shape the ASEAN economic trajectory over the next two decades. This breakthrough is due to the structural shift from a labor-intensive to a technology-based economy, coupled with the ability to sustainably attract FDI and effectively utilize Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). However, alongside these achievements, experts also warn of short-term challenges due to geopolitical instability, input cost pressures, and structural limitations such as the gap between the FDI sector and domestic enterprises, high financial leverage ratios, and the need to improve the efficiency of public investment to maintain sustainable growth in the medium term.

Import and export sector

Vietnam+ newspaper published an article stating: Import and export turnover in the first five months reached over 445 billion USD, an increase of 25% compared to the same period last year.

In the first five months of 2026, Vietnam's foreign trade recorded strong growth, with total import and export turnover reaching US$445.12 billion, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. Of this, exports reached US$215.66 billion (a 19.5% increase) and imports reached US$229.46 billion (a 30.8% increase). The trade balance recorded a deficit of US$13.8 billion, mainly due to the demand for imported production materials to support economic recovery. The United States is currently Vietnam's largest export market, while China is the largest supplier of goods.

News Report: In the first 5 months of 2026, exports of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products exceeded 30 billion USD.

According to a report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in the first five months of 2026, Vietnam's agricultural, forestry, and fisheries exports reached US$30.69 billion, recording a growth of 9.2% compared to the same period last year. This result stems from growth in all major sectors, specifically: agricultural products reached US$16.38 billion (up 6.1%), forestry products reached US$7.65 billion (up 4.5%), fisheries products reached US$4.65 billion (up 10.6%), and especially livestock products saw strong growth of 43.2%, reaching US$308 million. In the context of increasingly stringent international market standards for quality and food safety, improving production capacity, particularly through the establishment of planting area codes, is playing a key role in maintaining and expanding export opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products.

Energy sector

The government newspaper published the following information: Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc requested ensuring the supply, quality, and rights of consumers when switching to E10 gasoline.

On the afternoon of June 2, 2026, Politburo member and Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc chaired a meeting with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant ministries and agencies to assess the situation regarding the nationwide supply and distribution of E10 bioethanol fuel. At the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that the policy of switching to E10 fuel is the right direction, consistent with the national energy development orientation, helping to reduce emissions, ensure energy security, and bring price benefits to consumers. Although the implementation process since June 1, 2026, has initially proceeded smoothly, with ensured supply and blending infrastructure, the Deputy Prime Minister also pointed out limitations in communication efforts, causing some people to still have concerns about the compatibility of the fuel with their vehicles. To ensure the best interests of consumers, the Deputy Prime Minister requested the Ministry of Industry and Trade and other relevant agencies to strengthen policy communication in a transparent and timely manner, promptly address questions, and establish a mechanism for receiving feedback quickly. At the same time, ministries and agencies need to urgently finalize technical standards, develop specific guidelines for various types of vehicles, strengthen quality control throughout the entire supply chain, and strictly handle acts of commercial fraud. Leading enterprises such as Petrolimex and PVOIL are requested to continue playing a pioneering role, maintaining stable supply and ensuring that products in circulation meet national standards. Finally, the Deputy Prime Minister assigned specific tasks to each ministry and agency to promote biofuel production, complete the legal framework and financial policies, and create momentum for the sustainable development of the green energy market in Vietnam.

Hanoi Moi online newspaper reports: IEA warns world oil inventories could fall to critical levels.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that global oil inventories could fall to alarming levels, possibly even reaching record lows, just before the peak summer fuel consumption season. The main cause of this situation stems from supply disruptions due to conflicts in the Middle East, particularly the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has resulted in a shortfall of approximately 14 million barrels per day for Gulf oil-producing countries. While some countries like the US, Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela have attempted to increase production, and demand in China shows signs of easing, these factors only partially balance the market. The IEA emphasizes that coordinated emergency stockpile releases could be considered, but this is only a temporary solution and cannot replace addressing the root cause of the current supply shortage.

E-commerce sector

The website vneconomy.vn published an article titled: Opportunities for Vietnam to become a leading e-commerce export hub in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam is poised to become a leading e-commerce export hub in Southeast Asia, supported by robust digital platforms, strong manufacturing capabilities, and an increasingly sophisticated supply chain. At the 2026 E-commerce Export Conference, Amazon Global Selling committed to partnering with Vietnamese businesses in brand building, operational optimization, and the application of AI tools to enhance global competitiveness, particularly focusing on strong sectors such as wooden furniture and personalized gifts. Despite remaining challenges in logistics and cross-border shipping, the strong shift from traditional to digital business models is helping Vietnamese businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), expand their markets and assert their position internationally.

Bac Ninh Online Newspaper reports: Enhancing the value of agricultural products through digital platforms.

Bac Ninh province is actively promoting digital transformation in agricultural product consumption, notably by deploying livestreaming on digital platforms to gradually replace traditional trade promotion methods. This activity has received synchronized support from the political system, with the establishment of a branch of the Bac Ninh Provincial KOL and KOC Club, the organization of digital skills training courses for people and businesses, and the direct participation of provincial leaders in livestreaming sessions promoting OCOP products and lychees. Thanks to the effective combination of technology and new commercial thinking, Bac Ninh's agricultural products not only have their intermediaries shortened and reach millions of customers but also have enhanced brand status, opening up opportunities for sustainable digital economic development for the locality.
