The latest leaks suggest that Apple's first foldable iPhone, tentatively called the iPhone Ultra, is getting closer to commercial production. Meanwhile, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to receive Samsung's latest M16 OLED technology.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are rumored to feature Samsung's latest M16 OLED technology.

After years of appearing as rumors, Apple's most anticipated foldable iPhone project has now entered crucial pre-production refinement stages, revealing more noteworthy details about its configuration and design.

According to sources in the supply chain, Apple is preparing a product that is completely different from traditional iPhone models. However, to realize the complex foldable design, the company seems to have to accept certain trade-offs in terms of hardware.

The latest information suggests that the iPhone Ultra will be equipped with a dedicated vapor chamber cooling system but will not feature Samsung's most advanced OLED display technology, unlike the next-generation iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models.

The iPhone Ultra relinquishes the M16 crown to the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

According to leaked information from Schrödinger , Apple has decided to use the Samsung M14 OLED panel for the iPhone Ultra. This is also a generation of screens that is highly regarded for its brightness, color reproduction capabilities, and energy efficiency.

However, more noteworthy is that the hybrid iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models are expected to receive the latest Samsung M16 OLED technology, which is significantly superior to the M14.

The M16 is considered Samsung's leading-edge OLED technology, utilizing a phosphorescent blue light-emitting material structure instead of traditional blue fluorescent materials. This is a significant technological advancement because the phosphorescent material is much more efficient at converting energy into light, reducing power consumption and extending battery life.

In addition, the M16 is a true 10-bit panel, offering a wider color gamut, smoother color transitions, and significantly improved image quality in HDR content.

Apple's decision not to equip the iPhone Ultra with the M16 chip may surprise many, as it was expected to be the most expensive and premium iPhone in the company's history. However, analysts suggest this decision may stem from factors related to production costs, supply chains, or the technical limitations of the foldable screen design.

Not only the iPhone Ultra, but sources also reveal that the standard iPhone 18 version will likely use the M14 OLED display or a variant called M12+ OLED.

The M12+ is said to be an upgraded version of the M12 display series, which previously appeared on the iPhone 14 Pro and the Galaxy S23 series. While not reaching the level of the M14 or M16, this technology is still capable of meeting the requirements for high-end display quality in the flagship segment.

This suggests that Apple is trending towards a clearer differentiation in display technology across its product lines in the coming years, rather than equipping them uniformly as in the past.

A new "weapon" for the most powerful iPhone.

One of the most notable pieces of information from this leak is that the iPhone Ultra will feature a dedicated vapor chamber cooling system.

This technology has appeared on many high-end Android smartphones in recent years, especially performance-focused models such as gaming phones or flagships equipped with powerful chips.

Vapor chamber systems work by dissipating heat more quickly over a large area, helping to maintain high performance over extended periods and limiting clock speed drops due to overheating.

For the iPhone Ultra , this technology could play a crucial role because the foldable design typically reduces the space for heat dissipation compared to traditional bar-style phones. The inclusion of a vapor chamber suggests Apple is preparing for a very high-performance device, capable of handling demanding AI tasks, gaming, and content creation for many years to come.

However, to achieve the ultra-thin design and complex folding mechanism, Apple is reportedly having to cut back on some familiar features.

Sources indicate that the iPhone Ultra may use a simpler Face ID system, cut down on the telephoto camera, eliminate MagSafe, remove the physical SIM slot in many markets, and even omit the Action Button found on current Pro models.

These changes suggest that Apple is prioritizing internal space for the hinge, battery, and folding screen mechanism over trying to retain all existing features.

In other news, the well-known leaker Ice Universe has just released images of a prototype of the iPhone Ultra. According to current information, Apple's first foldable iPhone may only be sold in two colors: white and dark blue.

If the rumors turn out to be true, the iPhone Ultra would mark Apple's biggest leap forward since the introduction of the iPhone X in 2017.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is revealed to have unprecedented camera upgrades, and the price won't be cheap. The iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro, expected to launch in September this year, are said to mark a major leap forward in mobile photography.
